Can I please be a hipster and still drink beer that tastes good? I went to school in Wisconsin fer chrissakes; drinking anything out of a can is sacrilegious.

My amp is somewere between crap and passable - it's a Peavy Envoy 110. I hadn't really thought much about a delay pedal. I'll definitely check it out. And I always wondered how Nada Surf sounded like that. (And the avatar just comes from www.catandgirl.com. Finally: A webcomic for the overeducated h...

What's a good first effects pedal to buy?

About a year ago I bought my first electric guitar (gibson sg) as a graduation present. Since I'm really an acoustic girl at heart, I want to get a pedal or two to help me make the adjustment to hard-core rocking. I sorta want to make my own distortion pedal (what good is a physics major you didn't ...

I heard him say it at Madison, but if I had a joke that good I'd use it a lot too. He has more than enough occasions to toss it off, I'm sure.

Who is neal stephenson? He's the author of sci-fi books so good you hate to call them sci-fi. They're full of literary and cultural references and social commentary and well-done science and all that good stuff that sci-fi is supposed to be about. The word avatar came from Snow Crash, which is a go...

Actually, it was Neal Stephenson who first used the word avatar to refer to a representation of a person on the internet.

RIP Elliott Smith?

I've read a couple of rumors online that Elliot Smith died yesterday - can anybody confirm or deny? I found this which is apparently the official fan site, but no news stories anywhere.

As long as we're pigeonholing, I tend to think TLW are a bit more alt-country indie rock than powerpop indie rock.

I feel dirty for writing that.

There's actually a word for layering time signatures like this, although it's not coming to mind at the moment. I thought it was jarring the first few times I heard the song, but after a while it just started feeling right in my head. Now I just don't think the song would work quite right with a 6/8...

Agreed. Also, why is a signature required for any kind of official stuff? We put so much store in autographs, and I can't figure out why.

So jealous that I won't be there for any of the midwest shows! Y'all seemed like Good People at the last one I went to. But alas, it's a bit more of a road trip to first ave now than it used to be.

we also need to sychronize our swatches. Parker Lewis Can't Lose? Anyway, I'm down here in Dixie (Atlanta), and if the band ever makes it back to these parts I'll be there with bells on. What sort of responsibilities do mafia members have? For some reason I'm picturing something akin to the high sc...

Right now the books I've finally gotten around to reading are: Everything is Illuminated, Jonathan Saffman Foer - Fantastic, and the guy's only 24. Therefore I hate him. I Have Landed, Stephen Jay Gould - I'm certainly no natural historian, but these essays are relevant and accessible (and brilliant...

The Smiths. I know they're a huge influence on every band I love, but I just could never get into them. Maybe if I'd heard them when I was 13 and angsty I would have been hooked.

Dammit *sniff* - I never would have thought an indie rocker would make me homesick for Minnesota. Garrison Keillor couldn't have said it better himself.

*Side note following google search on how to spell "Keillor"* Garrison Keillor has one hell of a tour diary, too.

I'm de-lurking (finally) to reply to an ancient thread, after nearly a whole summer where The Long Winters have rarely left my CD player, and even more rarely my brain. I am a certified Minnesotan who went to school in Madison, WI. Now (as of about 3 weeks ago) I'm trying my luck in Atlanta, teachin...
