For Commander, CGFF seems to work; I think the reason it doesn't sound exactly right is that the original is on piano and the voicings of the chords aren't standard open position guitar chords (root-third-fifth)... I could be wrong, but I don't really hear any fifths in the piano part, at least, not...

There's some good stuff during, I think, the Maxwell's show that was posted on one of the Napster-clone mp3 sites a few months back. This show was after Sean's departure, so it's the leaner, meaner version of your typical LW banter, but John proves he can hold it down on his own when he needs to. My...

San Diego representin'
So... i live in LA but decided I couldn't hack another show at the El Rey theater for the following 3 reasons: 1) The place is HUGE, like cavernous, with questionable acoustics 2) It's all-ages and the young folks don't dance in LA 3) Miller Lite is at least 5 bucks per plastic cup, maybe more Now, ...

I talked to J.Ro before the band's (rather brilliant) show in San Diego and he told me they would be hitting the studio almost immediately upon their return to Sea Town... they also played an awesome new song during their (rather brilliant) set at The Casbah that night... so I'd say it's high time t...

I have a burn of the Pixies DiscLive show... good God they sound good. The band I mean, the discs sound nice too, though. If anyone wants to trade for the show, PM me. (I don't mind "bootlegging" in this instance, since they limited the number of these discs and sold 'em out... and it's not like I'm...

Belgian beer gets an enthusiastic "Yay!" from me. Anyone dig Hoegaarden? In Nice they sold it in Champagne-size bottles for $2.50 Good times, good times. Also, I think Sam Adams is a unique and delicious brew, so classifying all American beers as shite is a bit ludicois. (That's ludicrous with a Fre...

No, I stand by my Elijah Woods comment. Don't hate him, just think he played the character like he was 16, and I don't think that was the point. I think the dude was supposed to be a creepy loser who had no luck with women and stole this guy's identity out of desperation and loneliness. But it playe...

I'll be honest and say that other than a brief affair with the infectious but overplayed "Flagpole Sitta" tune, I never really dug Harvey Danger. (OUCH! Quit hurling stones at me!) That was during my youth in Seattle, before I moved away to Chicago for school and forgot all about the local music sce...

I think it's easily the most humane/heartfelt script Kaufman has written to date, and has the best resolution of any of his work. Didn't like Elijah Woods' performance, but other than that, I was very, very impressed with the film. Beautifully shot, well-conceived, and Kate Winslet made me fall in l...

Well, I don't know about the ONE band in the middle theory, Brutaful... if you enjoy The Long Winters, you will almost certainly dig The Shins, The New Pornographers and The Decemberists. Not only because they share "The" prefixes in their names, but because they all specialize in ultra-catchy, melo...

THE SHINS. I can't believe you aren't all in love with this band. Or maybe I'm just showing up a little too fashionably late to the party. Is that it? At any rate, I swear "Chutes Too Narrow" is the catchiest album since... I dunno, "Alien Lanes," maybe? No joke, the first track was stuck in my head...

Dude, TRAYNORs rule! I used to jam in this kid Gavin's basement on one of those. It was a complete mystery amp, a tube rig from the 70s that someone stole from a church. It sounded awful and looked even worse. I am jealous of your dual-amplifier technique, John. I too wish to wield the sound that re...

I gotta stick up for digital and say you can do all that good stuff with a mix CD to, if you care to try. I even edit the .wav files and make new fades/transitions at the end of songs just to make the mix perfect. I love that, and it's really hard to do with cassettes. My two cents. Don't knock digi...

It sounds strange amongst all you indie rockers (no offense!) but back in the day I used to play Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP on my way to work. Hearing the line "Bitch I'm'a kill you!" at high volume that early in the morning was like an intraveneous espresso injection--i was pretty much ready ...
