i'm sure it's more common than any of us know or care to think about. it is very, very tempting to ignore a few data points so that your expected hypothesis is confirmed, and it's easy to do it unconsciously too. the peer review system works most of the time, but sometimes you just can't tell. i'd l...

SWEET.

(p.s. I'd really like to hear more about that show you taped and perhaps get a copy, if possible)

Pfft. I was participating as much as anyone else in the Nerd thread. I'm just as guilty. It wasn't meant to be rain, so much as a rainbow on the parade. It's true. I think you responded first to my original post in a very nerd-friendly, nerdy, welcoming manner, which was reassuring for me in my boa...

Seconded. Being physically attractive, having good hygiene, being stylish, etc., in no way exclude a person from being a nerd.

I found the HD crowd less energetic and communicative than the LW crowd. Like they took themselves too seriously. Funny, I found it to be the opposite. Perhaps that was because the LW show I went to was in NY, at the Bowery Ballroom, with at least a few people who were "too cool for the show" as Jo...

Any of you seen Harvey Danger in the past few weeks? I was at the show in Allston last night and let me just say, if that was Sean Nelson With Laryngitis I don't know if I could handle Healthy Sean Nelson. SO INTENSE and SO AWESOME. I am very glad they decided to stick it out and finish up the tour....

this setlist was posted in the setlist topic , but it's not in order so you will have to figure out yourself what you've missed. it's definitely not in order (i posted it) but i don't think you missed very much. ii'm pretty sure you missed stupid, and you definitely missed it's a departure because ...

*Finally, in the company of drunken fellow nerds, science puns are often at their most hilarious. This can either be attributed to the interactions of good old ethanol with the pun-listener's humor system (a very scientific entity :) or due to a certain loosening of the pun-teller's sense of propri...

puns definitely up the nerdiness by an order of magnitude, at least. especially if they're puns relating to one's subject of nerdiness - as in, for me, biology puns (today in cell biology class, referring to our lab regarding oskar mRNA in Drosophila oocytes: "we might win the Nobel Prize, or maybe ...

I'm a junior at a (relatively) small liberal arts college in the northeast United States. I am female and almost 21 years old (in November! I will be seeing an OKGO show that night in NYC!). I'm a biology major and even though I'm pretty new here I've probably already made it apparent that I am a ve...

I'm glad to hear that. I'm a little cautious with my science-talk, largely because at the liberal arts school I attend I often get a response of "EWWWW" when I try to talk about science. We have very good science departments but most people who come here to major in the humanities have come here to...

Oh honey, you gotta stop worrying about such things. I think you'll find this is your new ehome now. You can fish for a discussion of pretty much anything and we'll bite (excepting the viewpoints of one or the other highly polarized american political parties-- which will be politely ignored.) We a...

New Girl, we're on the same page about a lot of this. I've also been lucky to have some very good philosophy classes, which have informed a lot of my thinking about biology and yes, improved my science writing. as for the animal ethics issue: that's something I've struggled with a huge amount. I was...

I realized I left out "Delicate Hands" from the Bowery Ballroom setlist, bringing the total up to 21 songs (I think, assuming I can count better than I can list songs)
