The French element, it is generally agreed, came via "quatre-corner," colloquialized as "catty-corner" and then "kitty-corner," meaning diagonally acr...

I'm stubborn enough to claim to be from the Netherlands rather than Holland. And yes, there is more here than just Amsterdam - that city is so overrated. Have you been to Goch? It's just across the border from Nijmegen. Notable for being the home of my Great Uncle Ignatz and an imposing array of Ph...

Hell's Belles are perhaps one of the best novelty concepts I've encountered recently.
Rather fetching young ladies, as well.

Your geographical concerns are well founded -- the poll function only allows for 12 divisions of the world, and I assumed most members would be from North America. Originally, Africa was divided into three portions, and Scandinavia and the Mediterranean each had their own entry, separate from Wester...

Excellent and useful advice, everyone! I'm quite, quite grateful. I'm not so sure as I'm still reeling from your use of the construction "a whole 'nother") I find it behooves one to occasionally resort to the colloquial, especially when attempting to cultivate an air of jollity and fraternity. Using...

Anyone with enough time and energy can get a guitar to make pleasing noises. But getting people to *listen* to those noises... that's a whole 'nother bag. I've never quite understood how musicians manage to bridge that gap between the garage and the local nightclub (and the local nightclub and a ven...

On the other hand, his whole thesis is that the reproduced art is the aura-less art. Which makes me wonder if aura is really a part of art at all, and not some related phenomenon. Like "preciousness". I suppose he'd argue that solitary, surviving prints of films (like some of Charlie Chaplin's pictu...

He seems locate it outside the film itself, in the offscreen lives of the film idols. Hmm. That might be true for a certain kind of Hollywood product, but doesn't say much about, say, "28 Days Later" or "Igby Goes Down" (both films with well-known actors, but not quite in the Hollywood star system)....

The Northwestern Music Nexus -- Question 1: Team Dresch
I. The Northwestern Music Nexus, Introduction I posit that the following is true: Premise 1: The Long Winters are from the Pacific Northwest. Premise 2: Members of The Long Winters have a reputation for "knowing everyone" in the world of independent pop. Assumption: Members of The Long Winters (and...
