For me it's sort of all of the above, you know... depending on the show. When I was young and naive and liked smoking pot by the bushel, I went to Phish shows, and I stood extremely close and either a) noodle-danced my heart out with all the other 'trippies' or b) watched the guitarist and tried and...

In a fabulous film called Safe Men, Sam Rockwell wails on the keytar for a bunch of elderly Scandinavians. Nothing geeky about it.

re: Endo it's an old nickname related to my last name, with other illicit connotations I won't divulge here... reading over my previous post here, it sounds a bit bitchy, and i apologize for that... but having grown up near Seattle, and having been 13 when Nevermind dropped like a bomb on my shelter...

Hmmmm

I really miss the interplay of the other musicians in D Plan. I love those guys but this new stuff feels kind of sterile by comparison. Not bad, just not great... like Emergency & I or Change. I miss 'em already.

Ridiculous on so many levels

Watch The Year That Punk Broke and tell me Nirvana wasn't a great live band. Then pen a song as catchy as ANY TRACK on Nevermind and tell me it's easy. Nirvana's success ushered in Alt Rock radio. It also changed the way record companies operated and led to thousands of bands being signed. (I'm not ...

Two Tasty Discoveries - Audio and Visual Delight

Got a new album today by a band called MENOMENA. It's pretty incredible stuff, loop-based yet organic, sometimes groovy, sometimes not, eclectic yet coherent, and obviously difficult to describe. And the packaging is perhaps the best I've ever seen--a massive flipbook. If you like atmospheric-type i...

Yargh!

I'll be there for sure, as will most of us LA denizens. Good to know other folks here dig Broken Social Scene, too... check out Stars, a related project. Their album "Heart" is extremely good in a mellow sort fo way. Not anthemic like BSS, but all fuzzy and blanketlike with guy and girl trading voca...

Gotta disagree with this guy

Yes, the Long Winters "rock" live, and I'm pissed I missed the LA show because I live here and was just completely oblivious, despite having checked the Tours link a couple of weeks back... Grrrrrr... But I just wanted to say that the recorded versions of these tracks are beautifully arranged and do...

I could be wrong...

...but most of the drum machine-type beats on TWYCDIH sound more like samples being triggered than an actual drum machine. If you like the "organic" sound, don't get a drum machine, get a sampler. Then you can load samples of real kits and sequence them into whatever type of beat you desire. Most af...

H20, huh?

I was curious about that pedal in particular because I have their Dr. Jeckyl & Mr. Hyde, which is basically a tube screamer and a heavier, Marshall-type distortion in one pedal. Visual Sound makes great gear: boutique quality pedals for mass-produced prices, and you always get 2 pedals in 1. As much...

An admission... and a recommendation

I readily admit to having Gear Acquisition Syndrome, and currently chain together some fifteen different pedals when playing electric guitar. I think I can even boast of having more distortion pedals than Mr. Roderick himself, if Fuzz counts toward my total. Of course, The Long Winters prove that th...
