The Commander Thinks Aloud! lyrics

Postby sour29 » Tue Aug 17, 2004 4:08 pm

here's my attempt at the The Commander Thinks Aloud! lyrics. i'm assuming they're not contained in the cd booklet... my copy is stuck at barsuk, along with the scared straight single. :\

feel free to debate / correct as necessary. this is a damn good song.

boys and girls in cars
dogs and birds on lawns
from here i can touch the sun
yay! yay!

put your jackets on
i feel we're being born
the tropic of capricorn is below
yay! yay! yay! yay!

we stall above the pole
still your face is young
as we feel our weight return
yay! yay!

a trail of shooting stars
the horse is called a storm
because the air contains the charge
yay! yay! yay! yay!

the radio is on
and houston knows the score
can you feel it? we're almost home!
yay! yay! yay! yay!

the crew compartment's breaking up!
the crew compartment's breaking up!
the crew compartment's breaking up!
the crew compartment's breaking up!
the crew compartment's breaking up!
the crew compartment's breaking up!
the crew compartment's breaking up!
the crew compartment's breaking up!
the crew compartment's breaking up!

I thought it was "Stall above the pole"

I'll listen again.

I hear that as

a trail of shooting stars
the forces calm the storm
because the air contains the charm

or similar. I suppose "charge" works just as well. It's definitely a matter of force, not horse, though.

I'd go with Jace, I think it's 'We stall above the pole'.

Yeah, it must be force. Horse didn't make a whole lot of sense. I'm not sure that it's charm, but it doesn't quite sound like charge either.

Any other ideas on that part?

What I hear is:
a trail of shooting stars, the horses call the storm, because the air contains the charge
Definitely not charm, and although at first I thought it might be charged, after a few listens I think charge is it.
I'm pretty sure about the word horses (the solo versions make it easier to hear the lyrics), and although I can't really explain it, it does seem to make sense to me, I get the image of Viking god Wodan charging through the sky in his chariot creating a thunderstorm

I don't have the solo version, sadly. :(

There's a keyboard version on this album. I like this cd a lot, but it's an eclectic mix of all sorts of music, and spoken word stuff and may not be everyone's cup of tea. The version of The Commander is beautiful.
There's also a guitar version from SXSW floating around on the Internet (as mentioned before in this topic, which I think I like even more.
And TLW did a live version of it with John on piano at a concert I happened to witness, and that was a really amazing, chills down spine experience.

I feel strongly that he says "horses"

I was hearing a soft "H" sound, not a slightly harder "F"

while "force" seems to be appropriate, the live solo version of john from sxsw points out that it's 97% "horse"
