WIPTF booklet appreciation thread!

Postby sour29 » Fri Dec 10, 2004 7:17 pm

We all know that When I Pretend To Fall is a wonderful album. But I think that it's been long coming someone said "Hey, you know what? The WIPTF linear booklet is the damn nicest/coolest/most super-fly awesome booklet I own. It's design, texture and layout are all fantastic, and went beyond all expectations and/or requirements of the typical linear note booklet." So, thanks to The Long Winters, and Thingmakers, who did a damn, damn, damn good job. Can I get a hallelujah?

A toast to Mr. Shawn Wolfe and his amazing artwork! Best cover and liner notes I've ever seen.

How about: I like the artwork so much that I'm gonna make x-mas cards with it?

Although I really really love the artwork, I just really never give out 10's. So on the note that it's beautiful I refrain from voting.

It's funny, I was just thinking about this the other day. The color scheme is absolutely fantastic. And Hey, not enough bands are including the lyrics these days.

actually I had to give a ten simply because of the rating system,
the7-9 rating was "it's nice but I've seen better" that definition made
me stop and realize ...No, I haven't seen better.. I wouldn't go so far to say as " it blows my freakin mind"
I blew my mind in the early nineties............. there was some bombay
gin, a hotel room, a monkey .. oh you get the picture!!!!

I think all of our names should be listed in the booklet for the new album.

I swear I don't want this for selfish reasons, but rather for the starving children in Africa, for they want this!

This is a non-hating thread. I'm just interested. What booklet do you like better?

I agree with Jeroen, I've seen better, but I do like the booklet! The design is very clever, and music appropriate, but it doesn't blow my mind. The texture was cool, but didn't do much of a thing for me. Liner notes I liked better are Radiohead's OK Computer notes and Harvey Danger's KJV notes.
I like booklets more for what they give me that I can't hear: the lyrics if they're mis-heard. HD's send you on a little scavenger hunt adding more references to the already heavily referential lyrics, which added to the decoding fun and made for tons of BB discussion. Radiohead's did similar complimentary work, by adding to the overall tone and feel of the cd-much like WIPTF's does-but it does it so much better.

I think it's gorgeously done. An art director friend of mine bought the album based on the artwork alone, ripped the album open on the spot, and sat on the stairs of a show to take it all in. She decided after roughly 4 seconds to offer the artist freelance work. (As far as I know, he didn't respond to inquiries.)

I think some of it's impact has been lost because of the huge surge popularity of that bold color, 70s-ish, gig flyer style....or whatever. Just like one AA poster next to your usual gig poster blows you away, but next to seven other AA posters, it loses it's power.

But when I first saw it, I was way psyched.
