Here is where we fawn over the new EP
It's gorgeous. "Delicate Hands" is easily my favorite.
I agree with the reviewer who called it "autumnal." I can't think of another group of music that I can strongly associate with a season (except, you know, Vivaldi), but this EP seems to capture the tartest of seasons. I'm glad I paid extra for the shipping - it arrived just in time.
Clearly, the world is itching for a Long Winters album.

Funny, I really feel that John Vanderslice is winter music, and I haven't played Sufjan Stevens or Great Lake Swimmers all summer. For me artists are often linked to a season - although basically it's spring/summer vs autumn/winter.
I'm camping under my letterbox, although I have heard almost every song on the ep from different sources, I'm curious what the whole EP will do for me - not entirely sure if it can still feel as a unity.

I actually associate TLW with Summer -- or at leat TWYCDIS
and WIPTF -- because I started listening to them in Summer,
driving around ln my little black Jetta, drinking cherry lime
Mister Misty. Or at least the second part was suggested to
me. But, I think it could be said that Ultimatum is Autumn
music.
For me, Fall is all about Eels.

I may have to change my vote...originally I went with Ultimatium, just because there's something about that song that really, really hits a chord with me (probably the bits with the 'I miss you, but don't say your in love with me' theme...story of my life). Now I can't stop humming Delicate Hands everywhere I go, so it's a toss-up.
to swim the mister misty sea and cease the mister mystery

Mister Misty?
Cherry lime?
You kids and your fads.
he ended up sad
I don't know if I'll ever forgive Dairy Queen for their discontinuation of the Nerds Blizzard.

I have formed myself an opinion, and voted for Everything is talking. Which is slightly odd, because it wouldn't rank among my favourite LW songs (yet), and both Ultimatum and The Commander do. I guess it has to do with it being the only song I didn't know yet, so I keep jumping to it when I put the cd in the player.
I must say that this song is on the very edge of being too much - just a bit more of that vocal synth, just a tad more drama in the oohs and aahs and it would have gone over that thin line and into the land of tacky. But god, the bassline, the guitar fills, the combination of weird electronic sounds and lush acoustic ones, and the great lyrics are enough for me to play this on repeat.
I like this version of The Commander better than the Future Sound one, I've always felt the break messed with the flow of the song. And Ultimatum, ah, Ultimatum... Delicate Hands is least favourite, but that might have to do with the other songs being so strong.
I really like to hear this solo version of Bride & Bridle. Somehow though, this version of solo Ultimatum doesn't grab me the way the recordings from KEXP in December 2004 and live at the Croc in Nov 2004 do.
Finally, I think we have to fawn more over the artwork, it's so beautiful. I bet it accounts for a lot of the autumnal feeling, if there had been icebergs on the sleeve it might have felt wintery.
Okay, my two cents, now I'll go back to my usual non-analysing gushing fanhood. Have I ever said how much I love this band?

*clears throat* hello all! i've been hanging around here far too long without saying anything about the illustrious long winters. so it's time to come out of hiding. i (finally) got the ep and i love it with a passion. so this was the best time i could think of to say hello. so hello! and the long winters are amazing. and based on my listening only today, i'm gonna say delicate hands is my favorite.
