okay, i might be in seattle for a day coming up... im going on a cruise w/ the gf, leaves seattle on the 6th. i think we'll have a little time there either before we leave, or when we get back on the 13th. if at all i am going to have some time, what do y'all recommend as a must-see? im not talking touristy crap, i mean like.... your fav. little cafe, or restaurant, something along those lines.

i prefer the five spot, myself.

also check out easy street records, elliott bay books, the ave in the u-district, fremont in general, and the pike place market because while it's touristy, it's still classic seattle.

seriously...go to pikes and go to local color (it's the coffee shop next to the cheese place)...and you can sit there and watch the tourists and the locals and the cute market people

Go to Top Pot and get a donut & cup of coffee. Mmm...donut...

I've always liked the market early in the morning--grab a cup of coffee and a pastry from one of the places across the street in the sanitary market (I've always loved that name), or a crumpet from the crumpet shop (on the west side of 1st, between Pike and Pine, I think), then wander around as the various vendors get setup and avoid the big touristy crowds.

that's indeed the location of the crumpet shop. and i agree that the market is best in the morning - i walk its length every friday morning during my walk to work...it's so enjoyable to see everyone setting up their flowers and wares for the busy day ahead.

oh shit yeah, the crumpet shoppe! i brought some back home to NC with me. i did actually have a reuben while i was there, i forget what the place was called but it was right by THE MARKET. and it was delicious. i am obsessed with that sandwich.

right, I've resisted this so far, but today I happened to see 5 minutes of an old OC episode and it mentioned a Rueben sandwich, and now my curiousity gets the better of me: what is it? Must be good if you're fighting over which shop serves the best, but apparently not famous enough to make it to this side of the ocean, like the Caesar salad or McDoodle.

What in the world IS a crumpet anyway? Seriously. Sounds very Beatrix Potter.

Do people really eat curds and whey too? How about welsh rarebit?

Reuben sandwiches are either great or disgusting, I don't think there's any middle ground (I'm in the second category...). Contents typically include corned beef, swiss cheese and sauerkraut (that's the deal-breaker for me...) top that off with some thousand island-ish dressing and grill/broil to warm it up and melt the cheese. I think it's usually on rye bread (least that's the way my Dad makes 'em).

The crumpet is similar to an english muffin, but way, way, way better when done well. I think it's a very British thing (tea and crumpets comes to mind), and they're great served warm with a little butter and honey/marmalade/jam. They are also served w/ savory toppings, but I think they're better with the sweet stuff...
