If nobody has any answers, I'd say it is up to us to come up with a story...

I heard that John knocked his tooth out when he tripped over a kid's scooter while running down the street trying to get to McDonalds before they stopped serving breakfast. Brotha gots to have his McMuffin.

John's tooth fell out while playing some of the Hendrix-style guitar licks that will be all over the new record.

John has had a fake tooth ever since he got into a fight with a Hungarian farmer over a goulash recipe on his walk through Europe. He had it fitted for little money in Bulgaria and quite amazingly it had survived many a skirmish in the band, but came undone in a fairly dramatic monorail accident in June of this year. You may not have heard of this, because it was covered up, rumor has it because the accident was caused by an endangered species of bird that Seattle's mayor (well known for his environmental stance) wanted to protect from shame and slander.

Sounds reasonable. And it would explain why we just got a Macaroni Soup recipe in "I Like Food...."!

And thanks to NYA I just had a Falling Down-flashback. At least John didn't pull a D-Fens (at least I hope so).

I heard that the tooth left of its own accord...on account of John failing to acknowledge its contribution to the lyrics of Pushover.

I think Elijah should go on tour with the band and do all the introductions.

A: Joe B. Mauldin

I heard that the tooth in question, is the infamous "Tall Chicken"...

once, in a far away outerspace adventure to the moon- john, while trying to eat some astronaut food, along with tang, broke it right as he sang "one giant step for john...AAARRRGH! kerrang tweedly tweedly bush! the tooth broke..then the ewalks got to him and told him where to get free heroin..cause that last crime, in...in....CRAP JOHN CAUGHT SCHIZOPHRENIA FROM JULIE!!! the rest is just well self explainatory.

I think this is so far the most plausible explanation.

by the way, if the tooth is the tall chicken, does that mean that it's gonna be for sale?

And! If so! Will it take long? Because I'm pretty sure you, Liesbeth, could out-last all of us. You're so good at waiting. (I'm just saying.)

Wow. no one got/cared about the Joe B. Mauldin reference...

If the tooth does go up for sale, I'm betting that it pulls down more dough/creates more drama than the HD Demo tape...

sincere apologies, even after googling I don't get the Joe B. Mauldin reference.

I don't think I would be tempted to buy John's tooth, but perhaps I would like a photo for the library.

Damn...
Joe was a member of Buddy Holly's Crickets, and responsible for knocking Buddy's front teeth out,
before a performance in London...
(Buddy used gum as a temporary replacement onstage)

Therefore, the correct response was: "That'll Be The Day"...
*sigh*

Really???
No one's seen "The Buddy Holly Story", with Gary Busey???
REALLY?!?!?!?

Sacha Frere-Jones' take is on her blog for the New Yorker.

In his introduction, John spoke of how he was a big fan of Sasha Frere-Jones' work for many years before finding out that he was a white guy, rather than a black woman. John's voice was incredible that night; if I hadn't thought I had plans, I would've driven to Portland for the next show, in a heartbeat.
