This is how rumors get started... pure calculating deceit.

Actually, Friday Mile *is* good, but I think it's important to avoid the situation that international rock superstars The Decemberists put Obama in in Portland. Wouldn't want people to think that FM was carrying The Long Winters, you know?

Well, I'll let someone who's memory works more linearly post the true setlist, but they opened with Give Me a Moment (sadly, the only song from the first album) and closed with Ultimatum. Between, they played Blue Diamonds, Scared Straight, Cinnamon, Stupid, Nora, Pushover, Fire Island, Teaspoon, Hindsight, Honest, and Seven. No new songs, no horns and overall, the show felt unusually mellow. I'm not sure if it was because The Cops were SO high energy by comparison or because the vocals were low... Others asked for the more sound on the mics, which prompted John to tease the folks in the front for complaining about being in front of the speakers--but I'm pretty sure that I was in the same spot as the April 2007 show and the vocals were much stronger then. I'd be interested in hearing what folks further away from the stage thought. My friend, who was seeing them for the first time, thought the show was great, so perhaps I've been a little spoiled by past shows. John still has the mountain man look going and I was pleasantly surprised when he took our advice and put his hair into 2 pigtails.

Confirming the other reports, unfortunately sound was pretty marginal for most of the show regardless of where you stood - whether upfront or by SBD. Bass was too high and washed out guitars and vox. Soundman fixed it once or twice but then John would switch to another mic to play keys and that vocal would sound low again. Tough to mix this band well without lots of soundcheck and experience with their songs. At the April 2007 show, they soundchecked for over 2 hours....I don't think this was their regular soundguy....Also John's voice was definitely strained by end of show which isn't surprising given how much they played this week.

Covers were VH's Hot For Teacher (through about 12 bars) and Floyd's Wish You Were Here which basically only had the bassist playing a rare bass run while the crowd sang and reminded John of the lyrics. This was pretty hilarious.

Best banter was mocking the crowd for requesting vocals to be higher in front of stage. John noted that he would make the request for adjusting the "imaginary (invisible?) speakers" at lip of the stage. Then John gently mocked soundguys in general and then lighting guys/gals in general who subsequently flashed the lights on and off, followed by drumroll. Was like watching Letterman.... quite humorous and entertaining if you like that shtict.

One person recording audio - 3 tracks into a computer, only one audience mic.

Showbox 3/4s full which was good for a fouth of July holiday weekend in the US.

Sounds like a solid setlist. I'm betting that the notion of playing new songs went out the window once they realized that they didn't actually have any fully formed songs road-worthy yet. A bit of a bummer, but hey! Any Long Winters is good Long Winters, n'est-ce pas?

I remember being front and center for The Long Winters in Montreal in 2003 and being made fun of twice -- once being in the worst possible spot in the entire venue for vocals. Oddly enough, the vocals for the other bands (Nada Surf and Death Cab For Cutie) were excellent to decent... maybe it's because neither had the standard singer-front-and-center formation.

EDIT: Did they have any merch? Anything new or unexpected?
