wish you were here LW cover (+ Camper Van Beethoven)
so the other night, john told me they covered "wish you were here" at the CA show, (and almost got through the whole thing) after i expressed my dismay that my request for interstellar overdrive fell on deaf ears..
i ask you, fellow little winters, does anyone have a recording of this?
EDIT: grant altered the topic title because he's not alone in obsessing over CVB.

Camper Van Beethoven does a great cover of Interstellar Overdrive...

Probably best to start with Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart and work your way back to "Take the Skinheads Bowling," then jump forward to Key Lime Pie and the more recent/post-reassembly albums.
It helps if you know something about 60s psychedelia and various other branches of art rock - some of what they do (did? do) best is cover stuff that should be uncoverable.
Their bluegrass version of Sonic Youth's "I Love Her All the Time" should be taught in universities.

Take off that jumpsuit, you look like Grace Slick!
Fact: I bought my first pair of black converse lowtops to be like my idol, Jonathan Segal, fiddle player for CVB. And I kept my rosin in one of black "fannypacks" * because he did, too. CVB took folk and made it rock - and they did it effortlessly. That's why Jonathan in a particular was a revelation to me: a violin player who was a totally integrated member of a rock band. Suddenly, there was a person who made me feel like my chosen instrument wasn't the kiss of death.
Submitted for your approval:Eye of Fatima, Pt. 1.
And this little hearfelt ramble doesn't even begin to take in CVB's incisive, clever, politically charged lyrics. Sigh.
*start giggling, British people!

Hm, I won't stop you.
For me, after Take The Skinheads Bowling, the next thing and clincher on CVB for me was another cover, of Pictures Of Matchstick Men. Then I got Key Lime Pie and their was no way back. Any band that does instrumental stuff as well as songs with lyrics, and rocks a fiddle ranks high in my book.
To take this back on topic, Wish You Were Here for some reason has always been a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. Not sure why, but I guess it's because in the days of short loud and punk the stadium sound of the Floyd was not favourably received. But gosh, would I love to hear the LW's take on that one.
ps: moved this thread back to Give Me A Moment, seeing how it's on topic again, and because I would love to see someone show up who says they recorded this. Cannot delete the 'shadow topic' though, so if you're seeing double, it's not what you think.

New Roman Times seemed to me like exactly what it was - a bunch of guys who used to be in a band together getting back after spending a few years in other bands as diverse as Cracker, Counting Crows, Hieronymus Firebrain, Sparklehorse, and the Monks of Doom.
I loved the fact that they didn't even try to sound like some mythical old nostalgia-addled CVB, but a new thing made by, like, actively creative people. That said, I didn't really get a few of the songs on there. But that cover of Steve Reich? That's insouciant.
