for the sake of Seattlites who have a feud with Portland and thus refuse to read the topic about a Portland show in which this was posted originally, I've split this to make a topic of its own.

Aw man, indeed! And such for a mere 5 dollars. You lucky bastards.

Somewhere between a book reading and a variety show, I suspect.

That's my understanding, too. A book reading with some awesome performances. Any chance of a Sean-John LW mini-reunion, maybe?

The show is sold out so hopefully everyone managed to get a ticket. I didn't really think it would sell out but now I'm glad I pre-ordered mine.

Possibly the most entertaining $5 I've ever spent.

John Hodgman came out and spoke about his rapid rise to minor celebrityhood, Jonathan Coulton played his theme song, they had a fight [triangle wins], and eventually, Hodgman announced his "contingency plan" to have another hairy troubadour available, at which point John Roderick came out, and played some songs.

With his feelings somewhat hurt, Coulton stated that he also had a contingency plan, and had his own tweedy intellectual: Sean Nelson. Much singing in all the possible permutations of musicians followed, plus excellent storytelling by John Hodgman, about 15% of it being about Battlestar Galactica.

At the end, he stated that he essentially had a backup backup plan for when he and Coulton would inevitably become too successful to tour together, and pulled a ukulele from his lectern, and broke into "Tonight You Belong To Me" as in "The Jerk". Eventually everyone on stage joined, and Roderick played the horn part with a piece of paper to his face, in a sort of poor man's kazoo. It was amazing.

Oh, also, people asked John Hodgman questions, which were all amusing (helped along by the fact that they were initially questions handed to them to read), except for the guy who warned him that he was a "professional daily show stalker" who made every single person in the room uncomfortable. ...multiple times.

umm... Acoustic Prom Night At Hater High? Classic John/Sean duo of "Only Living Boy in New York"... Sean played a Monkees song.

John Hodgman had been referring to Jonathan as a feral mountainman. When Jonathan explained that he wasn't a mountainman Hodgeman introduced his backup feral mountainman, John Roderick. John did an acoustic cover of Neil Diamond's Solitary Man and an acoustic version of Prom Night at Hater High (with Jonathan on harmonica).

Jonathan then introduced his own "slightly tweedy" backup for Hodgman, Sean Nelson. Sean did the Porpoise Song on the grand piano and Billy Joel's It's My LIfe with Jonathan on the acoustic guitar.

Then Sean and John "reconciled" and joined up for The Only Living Boy.

They both came back at the end and everyone sang Tonight You Belong To Me (I think that's the title). John did a solo with a piece of paper making it sound like a kazoo.

It was worth all the hassle I had getting there.
