Long Winters at Doe Bay Festival Aug. 15, 2009

Postby pahouk » Wed Jun 10, 2009 1:40 pm

I didn't see this posted yet but the Long Winters will be at this year's Doe Bay Festival on Orcas Island:

There's some great bands playing but I'm just not the camping type. I think I'll have to settle for seeing them at Bumbershoot.

This is one of the most amazing things ever. All these awesome bands (LWs, David Bazan, The Maldives, Friday Mile [woo!], Goldfinch, The Lonely Forest [digging their new disc, by the way], Hey Marseilles, Slender Means...) in one of the most beautiful places there is?

I will DEFINITELY be there.

I don't know about you, but I'd much rather see the Long Winters in the middle of the woods with 750 people than in a concrete jungle with 150,000. Besides, Doe Bay Fest lineup is every bit as good in respects to quality as Bumbershoot.

I went to Doe Bay Fest last year and in addition to the music, the setting is a real treat. If they're still available they have yurts and domes to stay in tucked into the woods above the bay, affording some great views. I don't have too much experience in such places, but the compound has a real hippie commune "live and let live" type of vibe. Pretty neat place.

Needless to say, I have my tickets again for this year.

Also of note: Jace Krause's band Friday Mile is on the bill, and playing on the same day as The Long Winters.

I agree the lineup is about perfect. It's just a little too far for me to drive by myself and there doesn't seem to be a way to get there without driving. Also I'm not really a "three days in a tent sounds like fun" kind of person. If it was a little easier to get there I might have been willing to rough it for a few days though. According to the festival newsletter they're expecting accomodations to go quickly so if you're thinking about going you should book as soon as possible.

I don't know where you're coming from, but you can take the Victoria Clipper from Seattle to Friday Harbor up in the islands. Then, walk on to an Orcas-bound ferry (which is free), and hitch-hike to the other side of the island (honestly the safest place in the world to do it.) Alternatively, if I can rectify this my-acquaintance-getting-married-on-that-Saturday situation, I would be happy to do the driving (and the falling on knives?)

I would also suggest seeing Weinland if you go.

That guy writes and sings songs that make me feel like my own personal heartbreaks are trivial when compared to his. I don't know what happened to him, or who broke his heart, but damn...

Zach - Doe Bay Resort is running a shuttle from the ferry terminal so I wouldn't have to worry about getting to the festival once I got to Orcas Island. Unfortunately the Navy has commandeered one of the Victoria Clipper's ships this summer so they aren't going to the San Juans this summer. (OK, commandeered is an exaggeration - I'm sure they just chartered the ship for the summer - but it sounds funnier.) I'll probably end up waffling too long and the festival will sell out. I appreciate the offer though.

Have any of you seen Drew Grow & The Pastors Wives? Seriously, one of the best live shows I've ever seen.

What a great reason to go to the San Juan's. I haven't been to Orcas Island since I went to Camp Orkila for 6th grade camp. It is very nice up there.

The Stranger is reporting that the Doe Bay Festival is now sold out. I'm hoping for many review, photos, etc. for those of us who can't go. In particular info about any new songs would be greatly appreciated.

The Doe Bay show was very nice. Set outside on a lawn, the band came on just as the sun was going down and the stars were coming out. They deviated a bit from the setlist, Commander and Blue Diamonds were played but Carparts was not and there were a few impromptu jams of Aerosmith and Beastie Boys. There was one new song called Portland according to the setlist. The band was in fine form, smiles all around, solid John banter, and the drummer, Mike Mussburger, did not seem to miss a beat on his first Long Winters show ever. I wish I could remember more about the new song... it's a bit downtempo and has a catchy chorus part. Hopefully someone recorded it.

Here's the setlist:

Wow. That's a very nice set. It would be nice is Mussburger's first (only?) Long Winters show was recorded, but I won't hold my breath. I'm glad some people got to enjoy it, though! Thanks, Eric2 for the minireview and photograph.

I saw NatureBoy filming so there's hope we'll get video someday. Someone posted a video of Scared Straight.
