list of covers: help appreciated

Postby Liesbeth » Sun Sep 27, 2009 1:00 pm

I've been toying with the idea for a long time, but now I've finally done it: compiled a list of covers, both as done by TLW and as done by other artistss of TLW songs. For the covers by TLW I've drawn the line at complete songs, although I'm not entirely sure about Mannish Boy every having being played completely (did anyone see it?), and whether Sweet Emotion hasn't always been combined with Beastie Boys lyrics?

As for the other bands doing TLW, I'm fairly sure I might be missing stuff, I've never really kept track of that for the Library so far, although I've just searched through the board a wee bit. Where I encountered the wonderful Tributarium project from yonder days, that was really a very cool thing. Don't know if there'd be interest in compiling that in one place. I could host it in the Library, if the performers and John are up for it.

I'm posting the stuff in separate posts, would appreciate any help on completing it and weeding out possible errors. They're in chronological order of when I encountered them, timeline may be off though...

John also participated in that "I've Got A Feeling" Beatles cover. I don't remember if it was Harvey Danger or not, but I do remember Sean taking the first few verses and John jumping in at the end. EDIT3: YES! IT WAS!

Also, don't forget Nada Surf's cover of The Commander Thinks Aloud! And I just read about someone else covering that song in the last week or two... was it David Bazan? EDIT: YES! IT WAS!

Also, I did a short :45 instrumental cover of It'll Be A Breeze. Posted it on Facebook for sure, and I think I posted it here in the thread where we were discussing the grammar of the Kisses line. Maybe it's too short to count?

EDIT2: Semi-related note - John is taking suggestions for which David Bazan song he should cover in return. Might I throw in a suggestion for Headlights' "Gas and Matches"?

For David Bazan covers, I'd suggest "Breadwinner You," off the wonderful Unaccompanied Voice compilation, a kind of Rosetta Stone for 1990s indie stuff.

John visited us at the pedrothelion.org to assist in his selection of the Bazan cover for the Packwood record. I forgot to suggest "The Longest Winter" which seems like a no brainer?

Nada Surf is releasing an album of covers, so it's cool now, right John?

http://www.brooklynvegan.com/archives/2 ... relea.html

It was nice to hear them on KEXP this morning - their appearance included a spin of their version of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy The Silence". I really liked it, but my girlfriend missed the moodiness that the original version has in spades.

Check out KEXP.org's streaming archive to listen. They appeared a little after 8am Pacific Time this morning (January 7).

I really hope they can add a Seattle date at the end of their tour, which concludes in Portland at this moment in time. Regardless, they're worth the trip.

Did you happen to catch what the second song they played was? I googled several pieces of lyric and nothing came up. :(

I did capture the show for eventual upload, after KEXP's archive expires next week.

EDIT: Ah, just read your link more thoroughly. Looks like it was Bill Fox's song.

Another Honest cover. The vimeo account is called Just Another Folk Singer, which gives you an idea of what direction the cover is going.

and Medicine Cabinet Pirates by The Unreasonables,
I found this clip on the Brazilean lyrics site, and it had me puzzled a bit at first, because for a moment I thought this was a lw trio line-up, but with strange looking band members.
