TLW to Perform at Nevermind Anniversary Show 9/20/2011

Postby pahouk » Thu Aug 18, 2011 2:14 pm

The Long Winters will be performing at a show celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Nirvana's Nevermind : http://blogs.seattleweekly.com/reverb/2 ... 0th_an.php. This sounds like a great show but also makes me feel very old. (Nevermind is really 20 years old? How can that be?)

A fact I just read this morning: in 4 years, Back to the Future will be as old as 1955 was when it came out.

It looks like the event is sold out so i hope everyone got their tickets. Is it too early to speculate about which song The Long Winters will be performing?

In my head I can hear John singing Polly (it would fit in with the girl name theme, although definitely more bleak than his own stuff).

EMP is going to be streaming this show live starting at 10:00 PM PST. According to the e-mail I got there will be two sites to view the stream: https://www.facebook.com/#!/Nirvana and http://www.livestream.com/nevermindlive. I don't know if you need to be registered to be able to view the show.

Edited to add: The show will be archived for 24 hours if you can't watch it live.

Shelby Earl, on the other hand, is really quite something....

Shelby was just setting up when I had to leave (stupid bus schedule) so I'll need to catch the recording. I've seen her before and her voice is amazing.

I'm not sure how much the stream showed of the crowd but the techo guys didn't go over too well. They were kind of a bad choice for this kind of show because that kind of equipment always takes so long to set up and the crowd was getting restless before they even started. I'm not a hardcore Nirvana fan so reworking the song as some techno thing didn't really bother me but a lot of people around me took it pretty hard.

This was a new version of The Long Winters. My guess before the show had been John, Eric, and Jason Finn (since he was already going to be at the show and has sat in with them before) so I was almost completely wrong. I recognized the cellist from Visqueen. Was the bass player the music director from Seattle Rock Orchestra (blanking on his name)? I didn't recognize the drummer.

Hope everyone gets a chance to see the show. Most of the bands did a great job and it was fun (even though it ran a bit long for me).

I watched from the techno thing all the way around to right in the middle of the Long Winters song, when my Flash crashed. (I seem to have a limited amount of time watching videos on this computer here before the browser seizes up.) And there was no rewind! NO!

I hope you get a chance to see Pigeonhead do Heart-Shaped Box. It was pretty powerful considering it was just an acoustic guitar and keyboard.

So who's the dude destroying his guitar and then having a moment with his, uh, other guitar, and then with some crowdsurfing guy?....

No, that was OK Campfire doing Polly. Pigeonhead played later in the show with just an acoustic guitar and organ.

It looks like most of the show is now on YouTube divided into indivdual performances. This is The Long Winters: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFdaEKFM0wY

Edited to add: Apparently I've been spelling it incorrectly, it's Pigeonhed, not Pigeonhead.

I got up early in the morning to watch. Champaign Champaign at 6am was hard to take. TLW was great but a difficult song to cover.
