John Roderick and Friends - Showbox 10/29/12

John will be appearing with John Hodgman, Jonathan Coulton, Merlin Mann, and Scott Simpson at the Showbox : http://www.showboxonline.com/eventdetail.php?id=38137. This is a separate show from their appearance at the Seattle Interactive Conference earlier that day.

John Coulton says on his page they are renting "special tuxedos"; I would love to see pictures from that show :D

They were brown rental tuxes with red cummerbunds. As you might expect from mail order tuxes they did not fit particularly well. Hodgman demonstrated some of the adjustable features of the tuxes and nearly dropped his pants in the process.

The show is a little hard to explain. Imagine taking the You Look Nice Today and Roderick on the Line podcasts, mix in a Jonathan Coulton show and a John Hodgman book tour show, then combine with a little vintage Rat Pack Vegas. Add in some living room furniture and booze. We heard two songs from the upcoming Coulton/Roderick XMas album. The first one was a country song sung by John. I can't remember the exact title - something like Christmas Even Comes to Jails? It was very John Prine. The second song was Christmas in July sung by Jonathan. Merlin also sang a song which I believe was an old Bacon Ray song. Edit - The correct title is There's Even Christmas in Jail. Here's the YouTube footage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYKbq_UnASk. Hodgman is is out in the audience for part of the song which is why you can hear him but can't see him. I'm surprised anyone got any footage. As you can see Hodgman was collecting phones during the show.

I had fun and laughed a lot. I got a poster signed by everyone except Scott, who had to leave early. (Merlin signed for him.) For those of you who didn't get to go I hope you can get one of the posters - it's one of my favorite show posters.

There will be more videos - I still have another song from the album, and the "live" "Roderick on the Line", but wanted to give them time to announce other Gamechanger shows or whatever. If other people put things up on YouTube, I figure the cat's out of the bag, but nobody has yet, so I'll wait a little longer. The song though, I will put that up once the album is actually out in the world.

Thanks for posting these videos. It was pretty brave of you to film during the show since Hodgman was confiscating everyone's cameras. It looks like you must have been pretty close to where I was standing.

I was sitting way over to the side, which is party of the wobble (zoom + distance...). I also put the camera away when seemed required, but given what they DID to the cameras, well. It could be my loss. :)
