Re: New Long Winters Show - 11/8/13
I had planned to write something about last night's show earlier but my computer died this morning. Now that my replacement computer is almost functional I thought I would do a quick check in. As expected last night's show was great. I had really missed the more rock versions of the songs. Andy Fitts was on bass instead of Eric (although Eric did play guitar during the encore). John and Sean were in fine form (with both their music and their banter) and seemed to be enjoying themselves. For the encore they did Car Parts, an Elliot Smith cover, Medicine Cabinet Pirate, and one other song that I am completely blanking on. I saw several people recording the show so hopefully the footage will show up. I heard that Barsuk was going to release some of the show but I'm not sure if that was just the audio or if they're going to release some video. I did see some cards for a Barsuk 15th anniversary app you can download. The only disappointing part of the night was not getting a chance to talk to John after the show because I had to run and catch my bus. I'm glad they added some West coast dates so that more people will get a chance to see the show. Maybe if enough people twist their arm they'll add some more dates.
Here's a few videos I found on YouTube:

Wasn't it 20 minutes of tuning followed by Ultimatum?

That's right. John spent some time tuning, then realized he had completely tuned it wrong and had to start over. It was the faster version of Ultimatum.

totally jealous and at the same time very grateful for your reports!! sounds like an amazing night

Amazing show. Two things I'd say:
The Long Winters are complete with Sean in the band. The live vocal harmonies he and Roderick achieve are a rare thing. I can't help but think but what would have happened had Sean stayed in the band and they made more records together.
We all know the songwriting genius, but John's guitar prowess is staggering. He's hyper inventive and technically masterful when he wants to be (goofy hammer-ons aside.) He was in rare form on Friday, several scorching solos, even some slide. He had his 335 and LP totally dialed in. He splits his signal between a Vox AC-30 and Fender Deluxe Reverb for a clean and dirty sound that is just balls, totally unique. It's awesome that Gibson put such fine instruments in his hand. He knows how to use them.

Re: New Long Winters Show - 11/8/13
you know a lot about guitars for a horn player...
just saw the 3 videos and it sounds great (even on audience recordings)! hope it's true that there will be some sort of release.

Re: New Long Winters Show - 11/8/13
They were guys handing cards for live.ly outside all the Barsuk XV anniversary shows.
It appears to be a smart phone app that you can get full shows on. Got around to downloading today and says I will be notified when the Barsuk shows are up.
Also, I spent 4 amazing days seeing 20 great bands in Seattle, and yet managed to not bump into John once.

Re: New Long Winters Show - 11/8/13
not just that, but if i'm not crazy, I also spotted Chris Caniglia on the last two pics. Then again, perhaps I'm making things up now?!
Re: New Long Winters Show - 11/8/13
You are both correct on both counts.
Nabil played drums on all songs, he sounded spot on.
Chris Caniglia joined John, Sean, Andy and Nabil for Carparts and Medicine Cabinet Pirate with a guitar he made as it was pointed out.
When I Pretend to Fall front to back
Encore:
Pushover
Carparts
Medicine Cabinet Pirate
Banter was great. It took a couple songs to dial in the "indie," some guitar changes and amp change. A great night.
