The selling of CDs online

Postby grant » Tue Jul 05, 2005 8:19 am

As one of the Vast Unwashed who have not gotten a Fancy Major Label taking care of the mundane, I have a business-type question:

What's the best way to sell CDs & DVDs online?

This is actually for a friend of mine, although I'd use the wisdom myself as well. He's got plenty of songs, a loyal fanbase... but isn't on any labels any more. He's *making a comeback*. And I'm his web lackey. Any ideas are welcome.

My best guess would be PayPal or something of the nature. That way, you don't have to pay for any SQL or whatever security things through your server (which I think costs about $50 a month). Most people have it, and it's free to sign up with. I don't know much about it (having never used it myself), but it seems like the best way to fly. I think they have a surcharge on money transfers though. Could be a percentage. It's worth looking into.

there's a website which specializes in selling records for artists who are unsigned. That's the good news. The bad news is that I cannot remember where I last saw it, or what it's called, and also that it's been at least a year since I last saw it.
I will try to remember.

Quite a few folks I know use CD Baby. It seems kind of cool.

My bands use PayPal... and it works great for us.

CDBaby looks cool, but they charge $4 per cd sold. Depending on how much you sell your cd for, that would really eat into the profit margin.

CD baby is good, they get your stuff on internet radio and itunes as well, and the money keeps trickling in.

Leading authority. :D My ex-boyfriend's band was featured on there once, back when they were a ska band.
