Someone ("Give Me Your Milk Monkey") posted this on the HD message board a while back. I just thought I'd pass it along. Oh, and I was wondering if someone could give us the full story on it, and how it wound up on the record.

The last song (AKA: "Shanty Town" or "A Shanty In An Old Shanty Town") was even more special to John Roderick because his dad was able to be on it. If I'm not mistaken, his father taught the song to John.

There's a shanty in the town
On a little plot of ground
Where the green grass grows
All around, all around
The roof is so torn, so badly worn
It touches to the ground
Just a tumbledown shack that sits way back
About twenty-five feet from the railroad track

Hanging on the line most all the time
It keeps calling me back to my little brown shack
Feet just as sassy as Haile Selassie
If I were king, it wouldn't mean a thing
The moon's so tall, read the writing on the wall
And it wouldn't mean a thing, not a dog gone thing

There's a sweet lady there in a rocking chair
Blowing her stack on Rainier beer
I'm looking all around and I'm truckin' on down
Cause I gotta get back to my shanty town

Yeah, feet just as sassy as Haile Selassie
If I were king, it wouldn't mean a thing
The moon's so tall, read the writing on the wall
And it wouldn't mean a thing, not a dog gone thing

There's a sweet lady there in a rocking chair
Blowing her stack on Rainier beer
I'm looking all around and I'm truckin' on down
Cause I gotta get back to my shanty town
I gotta get back to my shanty town
My old shanty town

Yeah, I'd like the whole story too.

All's I know is it's a song Brocktoon's family used to sing; hence Dad singing along speaker-right.

Any chance there was a photo of that session?

I like the end of the song, you can hear John's dad say "I think I hit about 5 words that time".
