Scared Straight tab

Postby mikeyk » Tue Nov 25, 2003 5:04 pm

Hey everyone,

Just joined this board . . name's Mike, 17 years old, from Brazil, found out about the long winters through liking tons of other bands on Barsuk. Anyway onto the "good stuff", here's my tab for "Scared Straight", if whoever's in charge feels it's correct enough for the main site, post away!

SCARED STRAIGHT

By the Long Winters, from the album When I Pretend to Fall, written by John Roderick.

Tab by Mike Krieger (mikeweezer@interair.com.br), who thinks this is the best pop/rock song of the year.

This was transcribed originally on piano, forgive any weirdness on transferring to guitar.

Possible chord layout (you could probably do something easier with a capo on the first fret, but these chords sound nicer when they're barred anyway)

Code: Select all

D#m [x68876]
C# [x4666x]
C#sus4 [x4667x]
C#6/D# [x66666]
G# [466544]
F# [244322]
G# [xx6544]

Intro:
D#m, C#, C#6/D#, G#
D#m, C#, D#m, C#

D#m                 C#
Washington’s on the one
C#6/D#
I’m in the middle of speaking
           G#
And you’re under the gun
D#m                       C#
Seething, leave it to the lone nut
          D#m                  C#
It’s unappealing in someone so young
D#m                      C#
Plaintive, you’re feeling so washed up
        C#6/D#                G#
And you mean it when you say you’re done
              D#m
Five lanes of freeway
         C#
But it’s all gone dark
    D#m                         C#

You called to say you’re gonna run

Chorus:

     F#
Well,  Can you wait?
F#
Can you stand it?
G#      F#              G# F#
Are you brave or are you      scared straight?
G# F#
      Scared straight?

Bridge:

                         D#m         C#
(She didn’t want you to) Speak right
                        C#6/D#    G#
(She didn’t want you to) be strong
                         D#m         C#
(She didn’t want you to) act nice
                         D#m      C#
(She didn’t want you to) take so long
                         D#m         C#
(She didn’t want you to) Call time
                        C#6/D#    G#
(She didn’t want you to) seem tired
                         D#m         C#
(She didn’t want you to)leave mad
                        D#m     C#
(She didn’t want you to)get so wired

Repeat Chorus, keyboard leads into third section:

C#6
Maybe you belong to someone
F#
Maybe you have finally met them
C#6
Maybe smoke belongs in the sky
F#
Maybe I hate it when you cry

Chorus once again, launch immediately into:
         D#m             C#
You were hurt so you got hard
         C#6/D#                 G#
You were cursed and scolded and scared
         D#m                C#
You were searched for, then ignored
           D#m
You want to burn the liars?
              C#
You’ll set us both on fire
       D#m                    C#
You’re faking, so I’m pretend sleeping
C#6/D#                 G#
Waiting for this to be fun
     D#m                   C#
It’s true little miss mean mini-bar guard
      D#m                         C#
We’re gonna have to try something new

C#sus4 C#
        Let me breathe
        Let me breathe
        Let me breathe

               D#m          C#   C#6/D# G#
Let me breathe fire down on you
               D#m           C#   C#6/D#  C#
Let me breathe fire down on you

And for those who can't, there's always the bass guitar.
Mike, thanx for the tab.

I actually play Scared Straight with a capo. I wrote it on the piano, and I like the black keys best, so when I learned it to myself on the guitar I figured a capo would solve the headache. I play it D#m C# D#m G# F# C# G# F#

Simple as pie.

Filecard: The glissando at the beginning of "I Don't Like Mondays" and most of "Sukiyaki" are played on the black keys.

So there's that.

Was that three or four Merlin memes all together in the last post?

You're distilling yourself, man.

I'm trying to become a pure golden beam of cultural cross-reference by Q2 of next year.

Wow, I really overcomplicated that one (C#6/D#? haha) . . but I guess what I tabbed out is what all the other instruments are implying, the way the band works together on that song is amazing. Anyone interested in getting a the-way-John-plays-it tab or are my original version and his comments enough?

Yeah, well, in the studio I played it on the piano first and then sort of invented the guitar part as I went along. The capo'd version is something I invented much later when we started playing it live, and our live version is very different from the record. It's likely that your TAB reflects the overall chord progression better than my simplified, after-the-fact guitar part.
