unsalted butter wrote:This is right, except that you have to tune a bit sharp to match the recording. That's probably why it sounds off.

Now we need to figure out this chorus...

e|---------------------------------------
B|---------------------------------------
G|-7---7---6---6---------------------------
D|---5---5---5----5--8--8--8--8--7--7--7--7-----
A|----------------------------
E|---------------------------------------

????????????

I talked to John just tonight about Unsalted Butter tab. He said it's terribly easy song to play, but has also stumped the likes of Ben Gibbard and Matthew Caws (of Death Cab and Nada Surf fame). -shrugs- Next time he has a chance to check this board, I'm sure he'll say that we're all wrong. And he'll laugh.

I've actually gotten into the habit of playing the song like this:

Code: Select all

e|-----------------------------------
B|-----------------------------------
G|-3---3---2---2------0---0---0---0--
D|---0---0---0---0--3---3---1---1----
A|-----------------------------------
E|-----------------------------------

Just because my fingers aren't very long and I play a twelve-string (read: thick neck), so it gets painful to stretch my fingers three frets over and over.

He also vetoed my tab of Stupid. Apparently, he plays the chords with really weird positions. If anyone else wants a stab at it, by all means--go for it.

Does anyone have the chords to the jangly, live version of Blue Diamonds?

Eric moves too fast for me to pick it up live...

Is Commander Thinks Aloud:

F C G F ?

C doesn't sound right...but it looked like that's what John was playing the other night...

the chorus of unsalted butter, transcribed from the user with the same name to the way i've been playing it, would be:

Code: Select all

e|-----------------------------------|
B|-3---3---2---2---------------------|
G|---0---0---0---0--3-3-3-3--2-2-2-2-|
D|-----------------------------------|
A|-----------------------------------|
E|-----------------------------------|

did anyone have a better guess for Stupid? or at least a chorus?

For Commander, CGFF seems to work; I think the reason it doesn't sound exactly right is that the original is on piano and the voicings of the chords aren't standard open position guitar chords (root-third-fifth)... I could be wrong, but I don't really hear any fifths in the piano part, at least, not in the C chord that begins the progression. So to replicate the sound of the recording on the guitar, you need to play stacked octaves, just roots and thirds, no fifths. Course, it sounds a little hollow that way, but what are you gonna do without a piano?

P.S. I could be way off base here, this is just how my ear hears it and my ear is dangerously close to giving up the ghost... Too many shows in too many bars, I guess.

No, I totally agree with that.

Sometimes my insight is just too much!

I have been playing it like that, augmenting the tone with the pungent shimmer of the Arion SFL-1 Stereo Flanger. It has the sound that reminds you of outer space.

On the recording of Commander there are no guitars. Only keyboards. But when I play it on guitar I play fcgf with the fifth in there, because I don't have an Arion SFL-1 Stereo Flanger.

I figured this out on a 12-string acoustic guitar. Don't accost me if anything is wrong, I know nothing of the Bass...I'm going to include all the parts with the new ones to reduce the need to scroll all over this thread to piece this together

INTRO

VERSE
You’re so cold, right
You’ve been cold all night
Now you’re holding on like you’re holding a child

Your eyes are shining
But it’s dark outside
Do you feel alright?

Making dinner dates?
What, are you blind?
I hold down two jobs just to keep one from flying

It was late, my mistake
A whole two hour left of daylight
My dinner date was hung-up on sun

CHORUS
If you think you’re gonna to be here long
I’m gonna miss you so much when you’re gone

VERSE
All that wasted time
They call it: Murdering your own apartment
Daylight glows
The patterning is desolate

Now it’s breakfast time
You’re holding Hollywood above my head
Unsalted butter is my punishment

CHORUS

BRIDGE
I’m gonna miss you so much when you’re gone
BRIDGE 2
My dinner date was hung-up on sun

VERSE
Now it’s breakfast time
You’re holding Hollywood above my head
Unsalted butter is my punishment

And to start up a new task (in the name of procrastination--I have an exam tomorrow I'm totally not prepared for, nor am I prepared to get prepared)

Government Loans starts off with
Am / Gm .. Gm / F

Rinse, Lather, and Repeat ad noseum.

http://ca.geocities.com/cherub_rocker666/nora.mp3 <-- to hear a (bad) sample of the above tab.
This tab owes serious gratitude to John and someone who tabbed John's piano chords to guitar. Sadly, I'm too busy/lazy to look up who it was right now, but I shamelessly took their information and simplified it for those of up who have difficulties doing that stretch to the fourth-fret on the A-string without accidently muting any strings. AND now it's in the proper thread!!

in Cinnamon there is a sweet mandolin part and i just happen to be in a band with a mandolin player. i was wondering if anyone was ballsey enough to attempt to glean the mandolin part from the song on my behalf.

Gov't Loans is played in an "open E" tuning, which will make the chord voicings much easier to figure out. Nora, of course, is played in dropped D tuning on guitar.

I can't help you on the mandolin part though.
