Love the photos; hate the enclosures

Postby Merlin » Tue Jun 01, 2004 10:51 am

The band's lucky to have such gifted photograph-taking fans, and I can tell you first-hand that John and the lads do love seeing your swell photos. Yay, photography! Yay, fans!

But, the thing is--can we call a moratorium on the sending of large photos and other attachments via email? It's not that the pix aren't welcome, but email is about the worst way to share a large file, as John's and my groaning inboxes can attest.

This is especially bad for when the guys are on the road and get a single email that eats the entire allowance of their account (causing all subsequent mail to bounce bounce bounce). A 16mb attachment will do that, you know. :)

So if you have a couple small snapshots to share--say less than 50k total--sure, attach them. But, if it's anything bigger, let's work something else out. Either post them to one of the myriad free hosting sites and send a link, or we can even let you FTP in if it's something super-special.

Thanks for the photos and for understanding!

May I suggest www.photobucket.com (again)?

Very easy to upload, direct linking (normal, php and html), pic size up to 250kb, thumbnail view, create different albums, you can make your account private, semi-private or public. Very nice. And free.

Thanks, Liz! Much appreciated.

I apologize for not having more suggestions myself--I know there are a metric assload of free options out there, but I'm not personally familiar with many of them.

Here's three good options for people who host their own site and don't mind attempting a bit of server-side wizardry:

* Gallery
* Snapgallery
* SimpleViewer

Anybody: feel free to nominate other free or very low cost photo hosting options you've used and liked.

Another one I forgot: PhotoStack.

Heather uses it (and other stuff) to great effect on her wonderful photo site.

Again--a package that requires yr own server space somewhere, but it seems pretty popular with the kids.

Holy crap. Photobucket rocks.

It took like 30 seconds to setup and I was posting a minute later.

Nice.

Yep, it's very sock-off rocking. You can also view how many hits/month your account has, which is kinda interesting.

I found it via LJ, like so many other.... useful... things.

Not to crosspost, but I wanted to make sure I add Flickr to the discussion here.

http://www.flickr.com/

Great app and the perfect place to stash your pix.
