PTDTB c/o Pitchfork

http://pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/37600/The_Long_Winters_Putting_The_Days_To_Bed

the long winters are a rare breed to pitchfork it seems... i feel like any given band's debut will be awesome and then every other ensuing record will be terrible, by their rating patterns

I don't know if the tripwire one got posted here, but I saw it over at the Barsuk board and oh, the hillarity!

I like to think of it like this: I could take out Ben Gibbard if a fight ever ensued, but I think Roderick could kick my ass. Hell, the dude is from Anchorage, Alaska. He could kill a Grisly Bear with his hands.

How true.

At some point, the guy does start talking about the record. That's when I stopped reading, though.

After I kill it with my bare hands, that grizzly bear will be grisly.

The band has an enthusiastic fan base that has been debating "Days" heavily online.[...] The consensus seems to be positive at this point, though many are surprised by how much they actually enjoy the more poppy sound.

Um... we've been debating it? I agree that the consensus is positive, but I thought it was unanimous. Is there anyone in this enthusiastic fan base that cares to debate that? And where has anyone shown any surprise that this record is poppy, and that it's good (if not great)?

I can't believe I wasted my money on this, this here "indie rock" is all the same, unlistenable crap. I should've bought Paris Hilton's great new record, now I'm just stuck with a coaster-of-crap.

I know I keep harping on this, but the post-modernist watchdog in me is amazed at how closely this board is being watched.

I'm going to start posting in disguise. From now on, I want you all to call me Loretta.

If it were being watched closely, Loretta, don't you think the facts would'be been accurate? :p

Funny, I thought Loretta died a hundred years before, and now I've got vertigo, verti-go-o, VERTIGO!

some more reviews, that I think haven't been posted here yet:

IGN.com,
Blogcritics,
contactmusic.com,
Illinois Entertainer,
Aversion,
Up & Coming magazine

but my favourite of today is this one: the Fountains' Water Garden Advisor. I mean, among all the latest on water features in the garden, they linked to the blogcritics review of PtDtB!
Further investigation of the site shows that although the news section used to feature links to water classics as Pool & Spa News, lately it has links to more off-topic things like NY Times' art critics, Candidates on myspace, and indeed The Long Winters. Interesting!

what I like about the reviews for this album is that it seems like almost every reviewer has actually listened to the album and made the effort to have an informed opinion. If that's the case, I don't mind if it's not just positive things being said.
I mean, half the reviews for WIPTF were of the 'Peter Buck is on it' kind and that was pretty much the entire review, which might have helped to get some people to check out the album but is unsatisfactory all the same.

i understand...

Postby bijou » Sat Aug 19, 2006 1:22 pm

i understand what you mean about some of these reviewers... i also have an idea as to the mere volume of material that can fly your way the moment you attach the label journalist or art critic, it's cool the cd is recognized... but maybe a little literary effort isn't unreasonable in this case, describing more than just a cursory listen. you should write your own review and place it on www.nowpublic.com
....you can use my pics if you want, happy to help. the idea behind nowpublic is the world creates the content of informational media, and your point is valid.
