2011 Tournament of books

Each spring we take 16 of the most celebrated novels of the previous calendar year and seed them into a competitive bracket—the kind you see in the N.C.A.A. basketball championship. Seventeen judges are enlisted throughout several rounds of competition, with each arbiter considering two books and advancing one. (...)Each weekday in March, two books go head to head, with a judge explaining in detail how he or she has chosen one of them to advance to the next round. Unlike other book awards, we ask our judges to come clean about how they made their decision, their literary biases and reading preferences, their personal and professional conflicts and affiliations.

John will be one of the judges for this. Wonder if he's reading yet... and what!

The Tournament has started and John is one of the semi-final judges: his judgement is set on 29 March.

I was wondering how the hell the judges can read the books so quickly, then realised it's probably like one of those tv shows where you wonder how the hell they managed to edit a show so quickly, until you realise that they 'pretend' that it's broadcast live but in fact they must have recorded it months ago, and come to think of it judging by everyone's tan and sun-bleached hair it does look like it was recorded in summer instead of winter.
