Camper Van Beethoven: New Roman Times

Post by grant »

They are back, and they are beautiful.

I got the new album last week, mail-order, (samples here!) and am still processing it all. It's a concept album, you know. They do a cover of a piece by experimental minimalist tape-loop composer Steven Reich. They do a ska song about modern warfare called "Might Makes Right" with a line something like, "We're teched up to the hilt -- compared to us these poor guys should be wearing swords and kilts." There is backward masking, there are instrumentals in odd time signatures, there is very bad Spanish, and the Unabomber makes a rather merry surprise appearance dancing a kind of elfin jig.

I recommend it. In stores tomorrow.

great news for the good people in Neu-Ulm, but what about the rest of us?

Alone, lame, crying in the wilderness as the wind howls... "Crutches! If only I had some crutches!" But wait, what is this? Does the wind bring something more than sleet and stinging sand? Are these strains of divine music? Open your ears, oh lost one, and BE SAVED!!

RISE, RISE UP AND DANCE!

Thank you!

I should also mention that there is a disco song on this album. A pretty good one.

I? Where was I?

Hmm.

Where was I?

Maybe I went to go mod-ska dancing... maybe I went to see the Circle Jerks.

I wasn't expecting a kind of "Spanish Inquisition"...

Our chief weapon is suprise...
surprise and fear... fear and surprise....
Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency....
Our THREE weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...
and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope....
Our FOUR...no... AMONGST our weapons.... Amongst our weaponry...are such elements as
fear, surprise.... I'll come in again...

I can't tell you how awesome their show yesterday was! Didn't get the new record, because I was out of cash... my friend did though.
(by the way I've read some not very favorable reviews of it... strange.)

Hippie Chix = great!
