I highly reccomend The Tragically Hip as a starting point - Phantom Power is my favorite album - Live Between Us is their live album which is pretty great too. They have been around a while and have a lot of stuff out there. I prefer their earlier work over their past 3 releases....
I'm a huge Hip fan, but then being Canadian, that's sort of like saying "My body needs oxygen (or beer) to survive". I actually just saw them play this Saturday, my fifth Hip show and typically fantastic.
As for other Canadian recomendations, Gordon Downie (the lead singer of the aforementioned Tragically Hip) put out his second solo album in 2003, it's called Battle of the Nudes and it's wonderful. Other past and present Canuk greats that have yet to be mentioned and are currently floating around in my head: Hot Hot Heat, The Superfriendz, The Flashing Lights, Death from Above 1979, Hayden, Controller Controller, Sarah Harmer, The Rheostatics. Pretty darn good every one of them.
I have to admit complete ignorance regarding Of Montreal, but on the good word of this board, I checked them out last week and, there's no other way to say this, I'm in love. Thanks.
