Martha was here last night, Betty. She was the awesome: gorgeous voice, hilariously deadpan, and swearing like a sailor. Oh, and she covered my favorite Leonard Cohen song, Tower of Song, thus scoring Triple Bonus Round type points in my book.

She's doing a massive tour right now, (she's out til Xmas), so hopefully some live recordings will show up soon. I'll keep an eye out.

Holopaw are from my town. Their new one (Quit +/or Fight) is also quite wonderful. I like to call them "the best Florida band on Subpop" which is really just my way of saying "fuck Iron & Wine."

theplacidcasual wrote:richard buckner_since

Incidentally, I'm seeing him in about 12 hours. He's playing in my town tonight with a local band I really enjoy (that has several ties to Holopaw, now that I think about it). I don't know his stuff, but I'm glad to see a recommendation.

Lately I've been listening a lot to The Extra Glenns. I found them by accident, but have grown to love them. If you haven't heard them, I definitely reccomend you check 'em out. They are Franklin Bruno of Nothing Painted Blue and John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats. Here's an mp3 download:

Just thought I'd share. You can definitely IMMEDIATELY tell it's John Darnielle, but the rest of the album is actually a lot different than the Mountain Goats stuff...

Sorry. That's why I usually use the other phrase when I want to express that sentiment.

This may have been talked about already, but I am
FAR too lazy to go check. Anyway, it is great.

I saw a mention of The Brunettes earlier, I also reccomend them. They have a few albums out. They are from New Zealand and their label Lil' Chief just put out a compilation this year called "We Are Three!!! 11 Gems from New Zealand's Lil' Chief Records" for their third birthday as a label and it features a song from every bands release from the album. They've got some good bands and this is a good intro to them.

The Brunettes have three songs on it plus Heather Mansfield (the girl of the guy/girl duo) sings in asong with The Tokey Tones.
