Yeah, I do like the Unicorns. I am now doing free association, and that made me think of The Orphins, which I also like.

Amazingly, the only Canadian group aforementioned that I actually own is Broken Social Scene. Didn't realize they were Canuks.

Anybody else here dig Gorky's Zygotic Mynci? I think folks on this board would like them. I am pretty sure they are not from Canada, however, but from the UK.

gorki's are Welsh, and the only song I know I don't know the title of because I recorded it from the John Peel show and John Peel couldn't pronounce the (Welsh) title, although he did mention that it meant something like 'girls doing each other's hair'. It's a sweet song. It's also over 10 years ago, I think.

My recent faves are A.C. Newman, Perfect, Grand Champeen, Samuel Barber and I've been going through some pretty mediocre compilations which will have to go because my X-Y-Z section has recently moved into the last row in our cd-cabinet.

A.C. Newman . . . yeah . . . I was going to mention his solo work when I posted about the New Pornographers. I was really surprised at how good it was. I was driving how from work, I think sometime this summer, and I caught his live show on KEXP. I love that song "Drink to me babe, then".

Ooh, Grand Champeen I will be seeing with Centro-matic in just a few days time. Life is good.

UK trip update-looks like I'll be seeing The Pogues in Newcastle instead of Manchester. Assuming my expedited passport comes through in time.

i second the A.C. Newman recommendation. it's very close to being as good as the new pornographers, and that's saying a lot.

c-dog, you rock. I'll be in Little Havana on Tuesday with my better half.

I think I saw Cat Power at the same venue -- an intensely strange experience.

I'm glad I could help. It is kinda rare that good acts come to Florida - and I'm pretty excited for this one. So I figured I would pass the info along... enjoy the show!!

I just heard somthing I wanted to share. I know we're all pretty familiar with Ben Gibbard's various musical daliances but have you have heard his live cover of "Thriller" (yes, that "Thriller")? I never had untill my friend played it for me just hours ago and it's one of the funniest, but also genuinely great things I've heard in some time. I'm not sure where to find it but if you haven't yet heard it, it's worth the hunt.

Did some searching and found a link if you want to download the MJ cover I mentioned in the last post. I should mention at this point that I know very little about internet download etiquette so if what I'm doing here is a no-no, I hope that the offended parties will accept my heart-felt appology.

Here's the link

Monsieur Gibbard is pro-taping and pro-non-commercial sharing of his live shows. So, you're not doing anything illegal. The biggest questionable thing you're doing is linking to somebody elses server rather than your own, thus using their bandwidth without permission. But I doubt there's going to be such a huge influx from hits from this site on that MP3 that anyone's going to notice. It's all good.

And for the record, everyone should download/trade/acquire by whatever means any and/or all Ben Gibbard solo/acoustic shows. They are all amazing.

speaking of covers. anyone who didn't get to go to the kexp show or at least listen to it should really check out john and sean's cover of "the only living boy in new york" as well as a few others. it was wonderful, well at least listening to it via my computer was wonderful.

Has Gibbard ever done a bad cover?

OK, maybe the Cure ones.

But c'mon. Bjork's Joga and All Is Full of Love? Euryhtmics' Here Comes The Rain Again? Tom Petty's Free Falling? Joy Division's Atmosphere? The Magnetic Fields' Why I Cry, The Smiths' This Charming Man, etc. etc. and on and on.

Speaking of Bjork....has anyone heard her new album yet? Any commentary? All acapella...I'm curious, but hesitant.

It was stellar. Ukulele, banter about how "We don't have Mrs. Pac-Man in Australia," lovely songs in a lovely room. Stephin Merritt, he's dressing like a funny little old man nowadays, isn't he (says grant, who knows %nothing about presenting himself as a funny little old man%).
