I just made a song.

Postby grant » Mon Jul 18, 2005 7:55 am

It's about my better half's weekend job (which she just quit).

It's called "Suicide Assessments," and it's online over here:

http://grantimatter.com/originals%20anthropology

It's mostly just me and a ukulele.

Have you made any songs? Where are they?

with friends like these...

I can't get that link to work without right-clicking and saving it to my computer machine, so I recommend you do the same. WMA is shitty, so it fuctions and sounds like shit. I apologize in advance.

Lyrics, because the vocals are (purposely) mixed low.

Grant, groovy tune, man. I've never heard a ukulele kick so much ass. ;)

I've made songs. They only exist on one cassette tape, recorded live at an open mic. We were so good, we taught one of our bassists a song on the stage during this recording. There's 4 songs of varying levels of quality: "Bed & Breakfast Singer", "Wide Awake", "To Someone" and "About Me". The last of which I am still immensely proud of its lyrics. Will you ever hear that? No.

There is a recording of a song I made up on the spot one night with one of my bandmates. Its on CD and I can very well post it and have you listen. It is horrible, and you probably would agree once you heard it. Its also directly based off a man my bandmates and I used to work with. We don't hide that fact. "His Name Is Digital Jim" is how the song starts. Will you hear that? Perhaps.

Finally, there is the recent reworking of the final song made by "PC Load Letter" (the name of the band), and that is "Naked And Alone", which the same Bandmate from the Digital Jim piece, put together without me. I think its pretty OK, I'm very proud of the lyrics on this as well, but I prefer a solo piano version which isn't recorded. Will you hear that? If someone can host, I will post.

I dug that tune grant! I really liked it! Since I'm at work, I can't check everyone's out right now, but I'll get to em!

Thanks. Post soon!

sour29, I love the feel of that backing vocal in the chorus. Somehow, the whole thing reminds me of The Swans (that's a compliment). What a big-sounding guitar you have....

Some songs from an album I made and will be putting out in September.
Dry
Where The People Waited

more info

Grant - I like the lyrics, and the ukulele was a good choice for that song
Sour - Dude, dark. I like the titular line a lot

Everyone: I think it'd be fun to put together a TLW tribute compilation if everyone who is interested is able to record and upload a song of their choosing to cover. It'd be called "Bad Recordings of Good Music: A Long Winters Tributarium." I'm open to better titles. I'm willing to be the point person for this if there are enough people interested in contributing. I think if we can get at least 10 people to contribute, it'd make a great comp we could put online or share in CD format.

It doesn't have to be anything fancy either. Just you and a tape recorder, if that's all you have. It should be fun more than anything.

Anyone interested?

EDIT: Not a musician? Spoken word is also acceptable!

Some of the best music i've ever gotten my hands on has been from compilations such as these. Yay!

(On the Aztec Camera/Roddy Frame list, the first cd was so successful that we ended up with a Volume II)

(Yes, Aztec Camera. Shut it! I'm old.)

Oh, what the hell. I would be honored to make an ass of myself in the name of Long-Wintry-goodness.

Do we get to choose which song we do, or will there be a drawing from a hat full of songs, or...?

EDIT: Please don't make me sing high. Ever.

I call Unsalted Butter. And I tabbed it, so I should have the rights to it. ;)

Grant -- thanks for the compliments. I should check out The Swans. Sounds interesting. :) My guitar sounds big because it is! It's my lovely, ever-trusting 12-string guitar. I love it to death. One of those rare pawn-shop finds. Throw a little reverb on top, and it sounds like you've got four guitars going all at once. Hehe.

LoveSick -- you have us all waiting with baited breath. Don't tease us so.

You can do whatever song your heart desires.

I'll probably do a few and see what comes out best. (I'm working on Carparts right now)

I don't think we need to set any limits; ie - one person per song. To me, seven versions of Nora are better than one.

Okay... now get to work!

Well I need some time, cause I don't have an internet connection outside of work. I will try to get it up by the weekend or sooner. I'll figure it out.

At any rate, I'm down for the tribute action. I don't know what song to choose (there's so many!), and as you'll see I'm quite the untrained voice.

If I'm remembering correctly, I've heard a song of LSJ's. I don't know if he remembers this. Anyway, he needs not be so humble.

Thanks DC, but they're really nothing in comparison to what everyone else has posted. You guys are killer!

I will be taking on not one, but 2 songs with my former Bandmate Dave: Cinnamon and Scared Straight. They will be completely different. I'll be upping the ante as well: we'll make a video for Scared Straight based off of our version of the song. Hot-ch-ch-ch-cha!

As someone who doesn't really have what it takes
to record music, I am ever-impressed by those
who do.
