R.E.M.'s "Automatic For the People" turns 15

Postby Moni » Sat Oct 06, 2007 8:40 am

Hooray!

In celebration of the album's 15th birthday, stereogum has released DriveXV, including 12 covers of all songs from AFTP from 12 different bands. You can download the songs for free here.

Unfortunately, most of them just suck.

In my opinion it's rather the contrary, but hey, each to their own :)

Oh, the Wrens do "Nightswimming." I'll have to dl this later.

Any standout tracks?

I loved this album when it came out, but really as an album moreso than for any specific single on it.

Ouch Rich. Even worse, you made my point exactly. This is the first REM album I didn't bother to get anymore, but it has some good singles on it, in my humble opinion.

I find it kinda sad that a great album band turned into a great singles band.... still, better some great singles than no good songs at all, I guess.

Mais oui, I think Rogue Wave did a wonderful job with Sidewinder.

AFTP is certainly not my favorite R.E.M. album, but it's the one I feel most attached to for various reasons.

It's always a little weird for me to see Matt Perpetua being all celebrity and stuff.

We used to hang out on the same message board before there was a fluxblog.

Of course, I respect you and your opinion...
I'll probably get bashed for this, but if you take out "Radio Song" and "Shiny Happy People",
Out Of Time was a much more fantastic album...
So is Lifes Rich Pageant...

I liked all of the "Everybody Hurts" cover versions. Especially Bodies of Water's.
