Wow! Realtime GPS + google maps = track your train.

If they ever get this in the US, I might have to break down and buy an iPhone.

my nerdy geographer's heart is beating like mad. I was about to follow a train all the way to Winterthur, but I have to go to the supermarket. Perhaps I am back in time to catch it arriving there!

This week's Dutch train news is that security is hired to guard the Betuwelijn freight route, because thieves steal copper cables. Background of the story is that billions were spent to build this freight route from Rotterdam sea port to Germany, with elevated tracks which were built straight through some beautiful landscape areas and a number of towns, but they forgot to ensure that the train line across the German border could handle the traffic as well. So for now only a couple of trains a day use the route, thus making it safe enough to steal the cables.

Now back to other nations, which do have well-working train systems.
