Official UEFA EURO 2008 Thread!

Postby Moni » Sat Jun 07, 2008 10:36 am

Had to be done.
First match is over, Switzerland lost to the Czechs 0:1.
Meh.

Anyway, we got Netherlands (Lies), Portugal (Squid-kate) and Spain (galleta) covered, so I guess I'll get to root for [Cannavaro-depraved-]Italy!

Oh and I narrowed the poll down to what most people/"experts" would call the most obvious choices, so please don't kick me you feel like I left out your favorite team.

hey, aren't Austria in this also... don't you root for your own team?

anyway, as far as I know no one thinks Holland can win this, especially not the Dutch, but I like be subversive, so I voted for them here. I must say I'm totally out of the loop on football, so I have no idea who's gonna win this. The sponsors, I guess.

I sure do, but I'm afraid I will only have that option for the three matches :(

As for the first one: CRAP. that was undeserved.
I can update you on this: our team isn't so terribly bad, it's the coach who is full of.... well something. i cannot believe some of the players he did NOT choose to play at the Euro. and it's been the same for a long while, he sticks to players and strategies that makes everyone go, what the hell is he thinking? gah.

anyone want to change their vote for Italy after last night's match?
what a great game, that is what football is all about.

Spain is doing fine so far, so perhaps they will make it until tapas after all.

One more for Portugal! woot woot! tho i'm not sure how much of a fight it was given the score? I need to actually watch the match, i only got to follow along on the beeb, who were none too impressed...Granted, that's not saying much, as - thanks to the World Cup - the only Brits who like Ronaldo live in Manchester. And of THAT subset, they only like him when he's scoring for them.

ARGH even if you forget for a moment that the goal Poland scored was completely offside and that the ref overlooked a penalty for Austria right after the break, we still would've deserved to win. Damn.

But it's great to see Portugal and Spain doing so well, they played some excellent games so far. And as much as I like Italy, they really need to get their shit together today, or else they won't deserve to get any further in this tournament.
On the other hand, the Oranjes were playing delicious soccer in their first match, and it'd be awesome to see them proceed to the finale in Vienna. I hope they kick some french ass tonight! (with apologies to all Frenchies)

you do realise that Vienna would be overflown by people in orange clothes, wigs, paint, clogs, whatever?
madness, but fun madness, I hope they make it, if only to cheer you up.

Are you kidding me, I love orange! We were in the fanzone for the NED-FRA game, and there was much support for the Oranjes from the locals, many people wearing orange stuff like Jägermeister bandannas or a t-shirt that said "County Jail" on the back (I was wearing my orange rain jacket, courtesy Boling Green State U.)

oh Moni, wouldn't it be amazing if you got to beat them - getting through to the next round AND eliminating the Germans would be awesome!
and talk about amazing, anyone see the final 15 minutes of Turkey vs Czechia? This tournament sure is full of excitement.

Just when you think you've seen it all - apparently (per BBC) BOTH managers have been sent to the stands? Moni, can you tell what the big row is about?

Apparently they left the area where coaches are allowed move around a few too many times. Funny it happened to both :P

*sniffle*

EDIT: on the other hand i just read that Ken Stringfellow is doing recording session with a great Austrian band, and Nada Surf are coming back to Austria in October. Sometimes, there IS balance in life :)
