What "Emo" Means To You

Personally, I find emo and people whom associate with it (and by that, I mean people that they "live" emo), either extermely shallow, callow and in most of the "emo kids/ emo mafia" a rather abnoxious, arrogant bunch who would rather cry to themselves, take part in cheap thrills/ drug-related forms of escapism; then actually trying fixing there problem(s).

Not that's not to suck that the music is an absolute piece of horrid shit; it really just doens't add anything to what they're already feeling. It just seems very knee-jerk oriented. "Let's see how could tell the saddest story in the most clever way;" is a reoccuring theme I seem to find within most of the genre. It's like the music isn't really telling a story, as it wants to make you feel like shit for living it better then them. So then what do some of the "true" fans do? Well, they try into recreate the songs. Not on a conscious level, of course; by they do.

Suddenly Brian of the 'burbs gets a hold of an arbitrary emo album, and suddenly feels the need to fuck his life up in order to obtain any sort of "truth" which the lyrics appear to present. Suddenly some Susan, out in the country feels the need fuck, not because she's horny or even desired, but because she WANTS to relate to Jenny Lewis' lyric*, "I'm a modern girl, but I fold in half so easily." So this Susan person enters a social situation where she can "fold in half" in the hope to gain some sort of quasi-spiritual, pseduo-philosophical understanding. What both Brian and Susan believe, through the "lessons" they have learned, make them a better, more spiritual person. What it gets them is a drug addiction, pregnant/ father to be and having the emo band they admire so much, wondering what the fuck is wrong with them.

Again, this doesn't mean that emo music bad, not at all. While the lyrics, can be sometimes metaphorical, and somewhat unique; to it's listeners, it generally helps to apply the thought of learned helplessness, emotional confusion, and just general discontent with there life; for what appears to be no damn reason.

*I only wished to use that lyric as part of an example. I am actually quite fond of Rilo Kiley, and that lyric just stuck out in my head.

I'm glad. 'Pictures of Success' (sp?) is my favorite Rilo Kiley song. I was going to have to get eeem-tastic on your ass. I really hate the word "emo," but only when it is used to describe a genre of music. Other than that, I find "emo kids" extremely entertaining and I like poking fun at them.

oh yeah, I don't hate them at all. I was listening to The Execution of All Things while I was writing that, and I didn't just want to go to www.allmusicguide.com and look up some random emo band and point the finger at them.

Take Offs and Landings is one of the best albums (in my opinon) that I own. I just used it as a refrence point where someone might look too deep of a message in that lyric and perverse it to their own ends.

Whenever I see an emo kid now, it'll forever be ingrained in my head that they're just really big fans of elmo.

I am personally a recovering emo kid. that's right, recovering. I think I've made great progress toward a normal life of not crying over spilt milk and listening to music with lyrics that don't all revolve around how sad and depressed and lonely the author is.

and I've stopped wearing the fuzzy red suit... at least out in public.
