Feel the fear:

1. Meet Joel's Army. If you're unfamiliar with this particular "dominionist" brand of evangelical Christianity, that link is a Southern Poverty Law Center report. You may see some familiar faces in there, like "biker preacher" Todd Bentley and the folks in the Jesus Camp documentary.

Those sounding the alarm about Joel's Army are not secular foes of the Christian Right, few of whom are even aware of the movement or how widespread it's become in the past decade. Instead, Joel's Army critics are mostly conservative Christians, either neo-Pentecostals who left the movement in disgust or evangelical Christians who fear that Joel's Army preachers are stealing their flocks, even sending spies to infiltrate their own congregations and sway their young people to heresy. And they say the movement is becoming frightening.

"The pitch and intensity of the military rhetoric of this branch of the global Dominionist movement has substantially increased since the beginning of 2008," writes The Discernment Research Group, a Christian watchdog group that tracks what they call heresies or cults within Christianity. "One can only wonder how long before this transforms into real warfare with actual warriors."

Joel's Army believers are hard-core Christian dominionists, meaning they believe that America, along with the rest of the world, should be governed by conservative Christians and a conservative Christian interpretation of biblical law. There is no room in their doctrine for democracy or pluralism.

Dominionism's original branch is Christian Reconstructionism, a grim, Calvinist call to theocracy that, as Reconstructionist writer Gary North describes, wants to "get busy in constructing a Bible-based social, political and religious order which finally denies the religious liberty of the enemies of God."

Notorious for endorsing the public execution by stoning of homosexuals and adulterers, the Christian Reconstructionist movement is far better known in secular America than Joel's Army. That's largely because Reconstructionists have made several serious forays into mainstream politics and received a fair amount of negative publicity as a result. Joel's Army followers eschew the political system, believing the path to world domination lies in taking over churches, not election to public office.

Another key difference between the two branches of dominionism, which maintain a testy, arms-length relationship with one another, is Christian Reconstructionism's buttoned-down image and heavy emphasis on Bible study, which contrasts sharply with Joel's Army anti-intellectual distrust of biblical scholars and its unruly style.

2. Now, see Sarah Palin's connection to Joel's Army.

No less than the official newsletter of the Assemblies of God of Alaska (pdf) promotes her proudly as one of the denomination's own, and she was actually feted at an official function of the Assemblies' Alaska District as recently as this year:

The opening night banquet of the 2008 Alaska District Council was honored to have Governor Sarah Palin address the delegates and guests. Governor Palin spoke of her appreciation for the Assemblies of God and requested that the Council pray for both her and the State of Alaska. Superintendent Ted Boatsman, who was Palin’s junior high pastor at Wasilla Assembly of God, along with Pastor Mike Rose of Juneau Christian Center, where Palin presently attends church when in Juneau, laid hands on the Governor and led the Council in prayer.

Mike Rose, pastor of Juneau Christian Center (Palin's church), is noted to be connected with the "Third Wave Movement"--a movement in neopente dominionist circles that is the major theological home of "Joel's Army". In fact, he's quite closely connected with Rodney Howard-Browne, a major (in fact, for some years, the major promoter) of "Third Wave" neopente dominionism....

Sleep well tonight.

Romney is the man.

The millionaire governor of Massachusetts will lead a crusade against the entrenched East Coast elite.

And the problem with the last 8 years in Washington? Too liberal.

I'm not exaggerating.

Is Washington now, liberal or conservative? Let me ask you some questions.

Is a Supreme Court decision liberal or conservative that awards Guantanamo terrorists with constitutional rights? It's liberal.

Is a government liberal or conservative that puts the interests of the teachers union ahead of the needs of our children? It's liberal.

Is a Congress liberal or conservative that stops nuclear power plants and off-shore drilling, making us more and more dependent on Middle Eastern tyrants? It's liberal.

Is government spending, putting aside inflation, liberal or conservative if it doubles since 1980? It's liberal.

We need change all right: change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington.

He seems to do the same things to the dictionary that Mao did.

Seriously, who the fuck is going to vote for gramps? (with apologies if you're going to. maybe)

(I need more beer and other mind-altering substances if I'm going to listen to the rest of this bull)

I actually rather admire quite a few things about McCain, and liked the end of his speech last night. He's just cloaked in nightmares - offshore drilling especially worries me.

My favorite part of Mitt's speech was when he promised to keep "pornography out of schools".

What? I am all for Barack's "Pornos for Kids" sex-ed program. Besides, abstinence only works well, just ask Gov Palin.

He should have added how Republicans are AGAINST kicking puppies and forcing you to sell your kids to a Pakistani whorehouse where they will serve the rest of their lives in homo-erotic servitude.

McCain wants to "cross party lines", in the same way Hitler wanted to cross Europe...

Isn't it kinda sad/scary that it takes a comedy show to point out the hypocrisy and absurdities of politics?

As for Palin, here is yet another reason to find her sense of judgement, let's say, questionable.

At least SOMEBODY is pointing it out.

I mean, besides us.

Taking a page from the Boss' book, more rock legends say no to the GOP:

Heart sisters' Palin song anger : Rock band Heart have called in lawyers after US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin used their track Barracuda at a Republican Party rally.

ps: Shallow sidenote: Nancy Wilson is besting my redheadedness, that color is fierce...

William Miller eh? Not sure.

In other news, I'm trying to find other friends to go see Stealing America: Vote by Vote with me. Looks depressing, but good.

Oh, the foreshadowing! Straight from the actual McCain Camp:
Obama sex ed in kindagarten ad

Wow, I expect stuff like this from right wing radio and websites, but I think this might be the first time I've seen blatant cold lies come directly out of candidates office. I wish the media would do a story on how much a total lie the McCain ads are spreading. eeeep.

They won't though. Everyone is too enamoured with lipstick and Palin in general. Dumbest media focus ever.

Meanwhile McCain is playing himself to be a reformer somehow. BLAH.

The Republicans are the only ones that can get us out of the mess we were put in by that lousy, no good group of mouth-breathers running Washington the last 8 years!!!

WE NEED CHANGE!!! And by change we mean keep things the same, but CALL it change. It's much easier that way... cuz, you know, bringing in a whole new group of people would be a real hassle. It'd be like that day on campus when all the apartment leases are up and every 20-year old is moving out and moving in somewhere else and the traffic is bad and there is that freaking U-Haul blocking the alley over by Capitol St. so you have to go ALL THE WAY around to Dubuque St. to get downtown. It's like 5 minutes longer IF you hit all the lights... and you never hit any lights. It's like the city controller is watching you and flipping switches as you drive.

Vote McCain - He did vote against Bush 10% of the time, so, you know.... MAVERICK!!!

I'm No You Are, and I approve this message.
