Astronomy Update!

Postby Squid » Wed Oct 07, 2009 11:18 am

A colossal new ring has been idenitfied around Saturn!!!

Saturn is the fiercest, most fabulous planet on the runway - first it gave us cutting edge ice water on Enceladus, now a new ring! WORK!

Oh, also, John's playing a show here in SF and I don't think anyone's mentioned it yet. I'll cover that elsewhere.

one of my favourite bits is this:
"The particles are very, very tiny, so the ring is very, very tenuous; and actually if you were standing in the ring itself, you wouldn't even know it," Dr Verbiscer told BBC News.

"In a cubic km of space, there are all of 10-20 particles."

somehow, that's not what you'd expect when you read a 'colossal' new ring was discovered. Just goes to show how large it must be...

Neat! Thanks for the link. Have to say tho, Jupiter (as a planet) isn't too shabby, either. Who else sports a Great Red Spot on their face that's actually totally awesome?
