Elec-tronic Salon Swap #12

Postby Liesbeth » Mon Nov 02, 2009 11:46 am

If I'm not mistaken I may have announced last year's board swap as a good way to get great music while waiting for a new Long Winters album. Well, we're still waiting and I could do with some more good music. Anyone else with me here?

How does this work again: if you want to participate, sign up by posting a hearty OY, A DOZEN SWAPS AIN'T HALF IMPRESSIVE. Around the 20th of November I will pair everyone up and you will then make a mix cd for each other. Since this call comes a bit later than usual, I was thinking it might be interesting to make the deadline Valentine's Day 2010.

A possible theme suggests itself, and I can hear you think 'nah, too soggy!'. But if I may quote our King God from one of his recent shows, how about a mix of 'emotionally ambivalent songs'? Throw in a hate song for good measure by any means!
Anyway, themes are optional and to be decided between the swappees.

So punters, do I hear an OY?

Sorry! That was me! I'd never missed one before, either!

I'll make two this time-- one for Kaiden and one for somebody else! They'll be different and equally well thought out. So, OY?

Soy?

oh yeah, did I mention the part about thinking carefully if you can commit to this without leaving a swap orphan? We don't want to have anyone stood up for Valentine's day, do we? Right, OI on, by all means!

AhOY, the swap is on.
Amazingly, after all this time and with quite some old school participants, it's still possible to team everyone up for a blind date with someone they haven't swapped with before. I think.

zach - icapants
grant - kaiden
Liesbeth - Unremarkable
plus the zach > kaiden one-way-swap on account of missing the last date.

So, tentative deadline and theme Valentine's Day. Don't stand up your swap partner. Pm them about the swap details.

Have fun!

I've had grant's for a while and have been enjoying it. Mine was sent out last week, so hopefully he'll get it soon. Our swap is almost successful!

It is totally successful - to the point where my spouse has taken listening rights. (A car repair is also involved, but yes, the CD is being spun in the living room rather than during my commute to work.)

It has crunchiness!

See?! See?! This is absolutely what I get for being off line for like a million years! I could really use some new music.

But, since the deadline is 4 days away, anyone willing to share some track lists?

Sure, but not before I've actually mailed the thing out. I still think I might be able to before V-day.

You know a swap is successful when you end up buying three or four albums from artists on the mix. I would recommend "Say Something" by Via Audio in particular.

Here's the track list of the mix I sent to grant:

1. "Furry" - 100 Watt Smile
2. "Measure 3" - Matt Pond PA
3. "Tryst With Mephistopheles" - Owen Pallett
4. "Switched On" - Islands
5. "Raincoat Song" - The Decemberists
6. "Heart of the Continent" - John K. Samson
7. "Landslide Song/The Dig" - Laura Stevenson and the Cans
8. "Favreau" - Kudrow
9. "No One Loves Me & Neither Do I (Live)" - Them Crooked Vultures
10. "Lanterns" - The Microphones
11. "Old Perfume" - Amy Millan
12. "Boys Like Me" - Paul Baribeau
13. "Go West" - Austin Lucas
14. "Curse Your Branches" - David Bazan
15. "Gone Man" - Eels
16. "Rappaport's Testament: I Never Gave Up" - Ted Leo and the Pharmacists

A lot of well-known names, but I was banking on the fact that he hadn't heard the particular songs I included, which apparently was the proper assumption.

Doesn't that Via Audio just stick in your head like anything? It was one of the songs I discovered on blip.fm. It put me off writing songs for a while (probably a good thing), because everything I did started sounding like it (at least in my head).

My outgoing playlist was:

1. The World Has Turned - Bit Shifter (off a bliptone Weezer tribute)
2. Fantastic - Boyskout
(them, Ipso Facto and Sunset Rubdown all belong to the same imaginary subgenre)
3. harmonise - Ipso Facto
4. Why Don't You Make Me? - Dreamdate
5. Let's Go Surfin' - The Drums
6. Island Ave - Jacuzzi Boys
(Florida band!)
7. Idiot Heart - Sunset Rubdown
8. Brittany Lane Don't Care - Meeting of Important People
9. Duchess - The Stranglers
10. The Boy Who Knows (There's One Day Left) - The Happies
(the best band never to get signed off mp3.com, possibly the best band period.)
11. Mary Anning - The Artichokes
(part of a series of scientist songs)
12. Cut You Up - Disintegrated Einstein
(another mp3.com band)
13. That dog is lower.... Foghorn Leghorn
(cartoon quip!)
14. Long Island - that dog
15. I Would Die 4 U - Mariachi El Bronx
(rockers The Bronxx go mariachi!)
16. Love Me Or Die - C W Stoneking
(I actually yanked this live performance off YouTube, because it's amazing.)
17. Spoonful - Howlin Wolf
18. west coast love affair - Unrest
19. The Bed's Too Big Without You - The Police
20. When the Lights Go Out - grant
21. Dial: Revenge - Mogwai
22. Easy to be Around - Diane Cluck
23. We Can Be Good (Live at WOXY) - Via Audio
24. Kwela Kong - Spokes Mashiyane
(one of my dad's favorites; kwela music is overdue for a massive revival.)

Sorry it took so long for me to get your mixes out to you Liesbeth! I was having problems getting to the post office when they were open, and when I got there, they had to look up where the Netherlands was! I hope you enjoy the mixes as I enjoyed making them. I've been rocking yours lately, great songs and all new to me! Thanks a bunch!

I"m glad mine got to you, that Japanese address was even more of a challenge than getting the mix done in time; at which you beat me anyway. My husband said that it looked like Chris raided my cd collection, but in fact there was a lot of new stuff there as well, great mix.

My selection of songs of an emotional nature:
1. The Very Sexuals - Valentine
2. Swearing at Motorists - This is not how forever begins
3. Malcolm Middleton - Red travelin' socks
4. Mega City Four - Thanx
5. Paper Moon - Stella
6. Rogue Wave - Publish my love
7. Phil Lynott - Old town
8. Grand Champeen - Step into my heart
9. The Who - You better you bet
10. Amanda Palmer - Leeds United
11. Club Diana - One out there
12. Pete Molinari - One stolen moment
13. Solo - The rules
14. Ken Stringfellow - The lover's hymn
15. The Bigger Lovers - Don't know why
16. The Horse Company - Wait for you to call
17. NeonBelle - I just might
18. Grant Hart - 2541
19. Centro-matic - Love has found me
(1,5,11,13,16 and 17 are Dutch)

Tell me a story about Swearing at Motorists. I only know them from one song on an a capella compilation, and half assumed they only came into existence for that.

Don't know awfully much about them, but I got to know them when singer Dave Doughman did a solo support slot for Centro-matic or one of their other incarnations. Really stark stuff and it stuck in my mind, although it took me ages to actually download an album. Love his vocals and guitar playing.
