Re: hard shell tacos
I hate hard shell tacos. The taste of hard tortilla actually makes me physically ill. No Doritos, Sun Chips, Nachos, hard tacos, etc. However, I love soft tortilla. Wraps, soft tacos, etc. are all awesome. Go figure.
Point of this post: I don't know.

Re: hard shell tacos
Hmmm.
I honestly haven't had a hard shell taco since I was a kid. In the 80's I seem to recall that it was a big deal to try and do fast foods at home* - with varying degrees of success**. Most places that I am aware of have soft tacos now. But I bet they are crunchy-tastic, no? I remember being very excited to be eating something akin to a giant tortilla chip for dinner.
That said, I used to hold them to one side so that when the inevitable crack-in-half occurred, I didn't lose half the shell. Tough to explain. We need visuals.
* Lawry's Seasoned Salt, you've got a lot to answer for. And you too, Appian Way Pizzas!
** Quoth Eddie Murphy, "That's not McDonald's!!!"

Appian Way Pizza may be the least appetizing picture of food ever to be placed upon a box.

Re: hard shell tacos
I always have the same problem with hard shell tacos. Soft shell tacos >>>> hard shell tacos. Also, you could always wrap a soft tortilla with beans around a hard shell to make the Double Decker taco. Mmmmmmm......

Re: hard shell tacos
off topic (in an off topic post):
I was in Minneapolis this weekend and was at a restaurant that had MACARONI AND CHEESE PIZZA on the menu.
Unfortunately I was with a bunch of girls who "care" about what they "eat", and it only came in a 12 slice and there was NO WAY I would be able to eat 12 slices of pizza and a pasta dinner combined.

There's a place in Ottawa that sells Mac 'n Cheese hamburgers. I don't know how I feel about that.

Re: hard shell tacos
There is absolutely nothing like a hardshell Mighty Taco from Mighty Taco.
They're so good, as folks in that second link testify to, that their food can't even be considered "Tex-Mex" or "Southwest" or "Mexican" style food. It's Mighty, not just a "hard shell taco". Though they are just as messy as any other hardshell.

Re: hard shell tacos
The mess is the best part!!! You eat 2-3 tacos, and there's like a whole other meal on your plate...
That's how taco salad was invented, I'll bet...

Re: hard shell tacos
the key is they need to have meat, greasy meat. let the grease soak into the shell until it's soft...

Mighty Taco? You just said the magic words.
I love driving by those and seeing blinking signs advertising fish tacos.
