Well! I somehow got "Bee Season" confused with "The Secret Life of Bees" and despite the fact that there is a Decembrists song about Myla Goldberg, I wanted to read her book about as much as I want to read anythying by Nicholas Sparks.
But I finally came to my senses when I saw the adorable picture of Myla in black and white striped tights on the back cover. I shouldn't be surprised, but I am...this book is wonderful. Who would have thought that a story about spelling bees could be so compulsively readable? La la!

i always argue that this is so much better than 1984.
did you know that the movie Demolition Man is based on BNW?
for something completely different (more political) but similar in the time travel/future theme check out Looking Backward by edward bellamy. he wrote it at the end of the 1800s as a dude in boston who wakes up at the end of the 1900s. not as flashy, but still a good read.

yes yes. many opinions.
personally i enjoyed brave new world a lot more. and there seemed to be a lot less hype at the time for me. so i suppose that skewed my cynical nature. both are probably equal in the 'classics' genre.
recent goodies i've read
'stiff' by mary roach.
'running with scissors' augusten burroughs
the death + life of american cities by jane adams? i forget her name. it's good if you're into cities.
reefer madness by the guy who wrote fast food nation. that was alright. i find him dry but as if i need to know.
'nickel + dimed' by Barbara Ehrenreich (had to google that name)
the new david sedaris
not much of a fiction fan.
i have 2 going right now though. confederacy of dunces and that ass famous eggers book. i dunno. i need a job.

David Sedaris is a wonderful man. I highly recommed his books on tape for long road trips.
Right now I'm gorging myself on Chuck Palahniuk. I'm just reading book after dark, freaky, compulsively readable, book. Its fun, but maybe a little too much Chuck at once. I feel kinda sick to my literary stomache.

AJ rocks!
There are two halloween costumes that I desperately, desperately want to pull off. One is the little boy named "Smut" from Drowning By Numbers (one of my all time fave movies)...and the other is a certain blonde cashmere sweater wearing girlfriend turned green beret from The Things They Carried.
I think I could pull it off...just need a wig and a necklace of tongues.
I just realized that I missed all THREE Augsten B. signings last month. GodDAMNIT.
