why are bands so afraid of the skynyrd? is it because none of them are up to matching the guitar prowess of allen collins or gary rossington ( i had to look it up online to keep the joke going, i don't even know if those were the ones that played on 'freebird' but check out http://www.skynyrd.com/ if anybody wants to find out for sure). i think someday a band should just secretly rehearse the hell out of 'freebird' and then spring it on an unsuspecting wiseguy that requests it - making the audience sit through ten minutes of arena rock glory. then everyone will be shocked for a second after the song finishes but a few tentative claps will start, and then a rousing ovation, and teh band will just shake their head and be like "there, we're never playing that song again." it would be the coolest thing ever.

maybe its because when most people think of skynyrd they think of trailor parks and the kkk.

if anyone is offended im just kidding

It was right there for you:

John wrote:The best and only response that a band can have to a shouted Freebird request is to play the song flawlessly from beginning to end, but that involves having a great piano player, three guitarists who all rule, (including a great slide player), and the will to actually play the whole 'live version' version with deadly earnestness.

The Long Winters can not, at this time, meet the minimum requirements.

If such a band ever materializes I can do a fairly passable vocal interpretation of Mr. VZ.

well i didn't say it had to be the long winters, i just thought it would be cool if some band did it. but i think john looks scruffy enough to pass as a skynyrd member, but they'd have to drop sean for the songs duration, or he'd have to age like fifty years and have a beard, and tame that mop top. the singer of 'flagpole sitta' doing freebird . . . the old meets the new . . . 70's southern rock anthem meets 90's pacific northwest zeitgeist angst (referencing jazz age culture). . . so many weird cultural signifiers to think about . . . it would be awesome. then it is decided. the long winters must somehow bring the two songs together in the most awesomely bizarre ironic show topper ever played. i wait the results expectantly.

Hmmmmm....

Postby Harvey Winters » Fri Jun 04, 2004 11:42 pm

If I leave here tomorrow,
would you still remeber
The rotten-ness and evil in me?
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now
(How 'bout you?)
and the bird you cannot change
but no one ever does...

Bye, bye babe,
it's been a sweet love,
put me in the hospital for nerves
please don't take it so badly
they cut off my legs
cause the Lord knows i'm to blame
now i'm an amputee goddam you

If I stay here with you now,
I wanna publish 'zines
and rage against machines
things just couldn't be the same
paranoia, paranoia....

Like that?

I think that seals it, we don't want this to happen, now do we.
Thanks Rich, for getting that out of the way!

Yes, I can't seem to get that cd out of rotation...it keeps calling me back. I guess I'm just a huge fan of "sad bastard-emo music" as a friend last night coined it. "Nothing Better" is one of my favorite sad love songs. Yet, I also think of "footsteps" by pearl jam as a love song. So there you go.

Sometime I'll tell you about this song and my plans for my funeral. [no, that wasn't meant in a scary way. No worries.]

Oh oh...I've already picked out my funeral song too:
Satisfied Mind as performed by Jeff Buckley

Funeral Song?
Hmmmmmm....

"Defrocked"
or
"Don't Give Up"-by Peter Gabriel

If it were an "Irish Wake",
I'd pick "Shanty Town"-TLW...
