I thought everyone from Seattle knew....

I just recently was at a Detroit Tiger's game(I am not ashamed), and I ran into a good friend from high school, who attends U of M. Well she had a friend with her, who told me she is from Seattle. Upon hearing this, I could not resist but to ask whether or not she knew of The Long Winters... she had no clue. I was pretty dissapointed. She did vaguely know of Harvey Danger though, but still.....

Even in Seattle, the LW are not well known. They are "indie" after all. The Seattle band really making noise right now is Vendetta Red.

I had a similar situation on my hands in one of my classes last semester. I ended up sitting next to this very attractive girl in my Music History class. Upon finding out that she was from Seattle, I had to ask if she knew of Harvey Danger and/or The Long Winters. Unfortunately she didn't know either band. "I'm not much into rock music," she says. Violinists are so stuck on what they do. It was understandable that she didn't know The Long Winters considering they weren't around when last she lived in Seattle, but to not know Harvey Danger should be a felony (especially in Seattle). I told her that when she got back home to get to one of your concerts if at all possible. God willing and the creek don't rise.

Understandable, but I always read articles from the great Northwest, and hear about how The Long Winters are #1 on the "Northwest Rock Chart"(or something like that). So when I hear these things, I only assume, which is obviously my first mistake.

I also just met a girl from Seattle who had never heard of The Long Winters, although she did seem to vaguely recognize Harvey Danger. She seems to be more into the jazz scene, though. I, of course, urged her to check out an LW show as soon as humanly possible.

Yes. Those charts are made up of people who buy music, and mostly in independent music stores.

Yeah, that makes sense. But you guys should understand, everyone I have met who goes to U of M is more into indy rock, or something that isn't "mainstream"...so I figured she A. goes to U of M, and 2. is from Seattle, that would just increase her chances of knowing of them....at least she knew about Harvey Danger

An odd coincidence. I had never heard of Vendetta Red until I read that post a couple days ago. Then yesterday as I flipped past the hip-hop channel, errrr, rather, "MTV2" as they call it, I saw the start of a Vendetta Red video. That was the worst tripe I've ever seen or heard. Why would anyone willingly subject themselves to that?

Because some of us like it. My 5 year old likes them too. Has a shirt and everything. They put on one of the greatest live shows in my opinion. Unfortunately I probably won't be able to see them for a long time because I hate the bands they tour thru w/and I don't want to see them in a large venue(they will be coming thru next @ the exhibition center).

PS...I like Linkin Park too.

It is my opinion (and I freely admit that I can be a bit delusional at times) that most people will recognize and gravitate toward quality when and if they are actually exposed to it. However, most people are too tired, angry, frustrated, depressed etc. to put much energy into seeking high quality in anything...food, books, TV, mates, music...for the most part they are going to take whatever's nearest and easiest and most accessible.

Clearly indie bands somehow manage to tour and get played and sell records. But imagine how successful they could be if they were in regular rotation on all the CC Rock stations? And imagine how many other fabulously talented bands out there would actually be able to make a living playing music instead of struggling along on their bartending wages and giving up at age 35.

Case In Point: A few days ago I was listening to WIPTF at work. My boss, a small business owner in his early 50s, stopped to listen to Blue Diamonds, expressed his appreciation and then asked who the band was and where he could buy their album. Had I not played the album at work he never would have heard it and certainly never would have sought out the album.

I blame everything on Clear Channel. Radiohead is comming to Seattle soon, and they're playing at the White River Ampetheater, which is a Clear Channel venue. Grrrrrrr.

i don't blame you, they were pretty steep. but i am not so good w/money and spend it in ways i really shouldn't. music is my weakness.
