ah, but that's the thing, see, for me it sometimes does ruin my interpretation, it's like my image fades even if I try to hold on to it. It's kinda similar to reading a book, then seeing a film and the actors will take the place of how you imagined the characters to be.kaiden wrote:For me, having the artist illuminate the meaning of the lyrics doesn't ruin my interpretation even when mine is different than the intention.
also, thanks HarveyD for mentioning April Fools Day, there goes my immaculate plan to spin a yarn about the upcoming LW album (or how it might be somewhat delayed by John going on tour as a guitar roadie with ZZ Top?)

Considering the lack of updates regarding this issue, I would say by all means, go for it! Maybe you can make it so outreagous that John will feel enticed to offer some real news?Liesbeth wrote: also, thanks HarveyD for mentioning April Fools Day, there goes my immaculate plan to spin a yarn about the upcoming LW album (or how it might be somewhat delayed by John going on tour as a guitar roadie with ZZ Top?)
And yea it's interesting to see how many people know the word "grok", but hardly anyone has actually the book where it came from. Makes me feel lonely :(
I feel MUCH more strongly about someone throwing a wrench in my interpretation of a book. Several years back, I found a book that completely suspended my disbelief (Life of Pi); to the extent that I hadn't felt since I was a child. Then I went to a book reading by the author and he started revealing his motivation behind the story and it ruined the book for me. But, with music--I don't have the same reaction. Maybe 'cuz I listen to the same song numerous times over numerous years and my interpretations typically evolve...they feel more malleable. But since I rarely re-read books, I'm more invested in my "first impression."ah, but that's the thing, see, for me it sometimes does ruin my interpretation, it's like my image fades even if I try to hold on to it. I have nothing but respect for you and all senoras...galleta wrote:
oh, HW, don't be so idiomatic. i'm spending way too much time checking out dictionaries to find out what you mean!
respect the señoras, for god sake!
But "listen and guess" doesn't always work for everyone...
In high school, I had to prove to a classmate that Toto's "Africa", was not a song "about a dog"...
Before this gets out of hand, Tipper Gore is wrong, wrong, wrong...
(Please refer to Dennis Miller's rant on "McCullom vs. Osbourne")
Also, if it wasn't for "Sweet Home Alabama", I would have never liked Neil Young,
because his voice is too horrible, to want to understand the lyrics....

"S.H.A." references Neil Young's "Southern Man"...

my "My English is pretty good but not THAT good" trick is google toolbar; I just type in whatever word/phrase you idiomatically throw at me and usually the first page of results gives the answer without even having to click any further.
that's also how I know that Grok, besides coming from the 1961 novel Stranger in a Strange Land by Heinlein (are you saying it is worth reading, Moni?), also is a Dutch cover band. Although that might not show up when you guys search for it, it was in fact the second link Google gave me.
hm, now I have Iron Maiden in my head...

In short, yes, after some thinking about it (it's been a couple of years since I read that book), I'd recommend it. I have a copy (paperback, english) which I'v been wanting to give away to make room for new books. PM/e-mail me if you want it, Lies. (I wanted to answer this in a longer post ina an old thread about book recommendations/books recently read, but I couldn't find it)
Oh and I had to look up "at loggerheads", too, but I like it when people use colloquialisms I've never heard of. I gotta learn that stuff somehow!
